Championship Game Recap...
Day 2 Recap…
In Day 2 #13 seed Lake Weir who went winless in Day 1 had the upset of the day beating a loaded Dunnellon team 32-17. Unfortunately for Lake Weir they ran into a very talented Wiregrass Ranch team losing in the Quarterfinals 43-12.
West Port kept the ball rolling in Day 2 making it all the way to the semi-finals, even without their top WR Zeke Anderson who was out with an injury. WP beat Ocoee in round 1 29-20, Hollywood Hills in Round 2 32-25, but ran into in a road block in Mainland High School in the semi-finals losing 40-6.
Vanguard's Day 2 run was entertaining to watch as the high octane offense led by QB N'Kosi Perry put up big points on the board every game win at scores of 44-17, 40-24, 40-24 versus Bisop Verot, Spoto, and Wiregrass Ranch respectively putting them in the championship game against the defending champs Mainland High School.
Mainlands offense was also no slouch as they scored at least 36 points in each of their playoff Day 2 games.
Day 1 recap...
Day 1 was full of good football. In the 14 team tournament the surprise team of the day was Spoto High School (Riverview) going 4-0 and receiving the #1 seed for the single elimination round in Day 2. The returning champs from 2015, Mainland High School earned their way to a #2 seed by also going 4-0, in which points against became the tie breaker.
Game of the day in Day 1 was Mainland vs Vanguard (Ocala). Mainland won it in a very tight game 29-28. Vanguard finished off Day 1 going 3-1. Other local teams Marion County teams who performed well in Day 1 were West Port (3-1) and Dunnellon (2-2). Both West Port and Dunnellon won their pools in Day 1 receiving the #3 & #4 seeds respectively for single elimination play in Day 2. Big credit to Lake Weir who brought 2 teams (Varsity & JV) and the JV team actually went 1-3 beating a solid Bishop Verot Varsity Squad. Forest also competed very well going 1-3 while playing all of their opponents closely.
From out of town Wiregrass Ranch (Wesley Chapel), Boca Ciega (St. Pete), & Columbia (Lake City) also competed very strongly winning very competitive games. Also big props to schools Hollywood Hills, Bishop Verot, and Ocoee who exhibited excellent talent despite Day 1 losing records. Ocoee and Hollywood just got caught up in a very tough pool, where if they played in one of the other pools they could have had a much different Day 1 result.
