The Atlas Mountains

Surround yourself with the country’s largest peaks as you traverse the rugged valleys and Berber villages of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Pass cascading streams and stacked terraces watered by fresh snowmelt and soak up unrivalled views of mighty Mount Toubkal. At night, stay in Berbers’ gites or opt for an authentic camping experience in the summer months.

The crowning gem of the Atlas range, Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in both Morocco and North Africa, reaching a staggering 4,167m.

Travel 1.5 hours due south of Marrakech and spend two days scaling this stunning spectacle. Departing Imlil, you’ll set-off with your local Berber guide and luggage mules. Pass through Berber farming villages, meeting friendly locals and immersing yourself in their traditional way of life. Take in the beautiful scenery of terraced farmland scattered with goats and cattle. Spend the night with likeminded adventurers in the Mouflon or Neltner mountain refuge before an early start to watch sunrise at the summit. A new day brings magnificent views of Marrakech Plain and the High Atlas Peaks to the north, and the Anti Atlas and Sahara Desert to the south.

To avoid the winter snow, visit between April and October when days are warm and nights are cool. No mountain experience is necessary, but it’s a journey for fit, regular hikers.

The Sahara Desert

No trip to Morocco is complete without experiencing the extreme terrain of the largest desert on earth. The country offers relatively easy access to the Sahara Desert, allowing you to explore its endless expanses of golden dunes.

Merzouga is the most popular places to embark on a desert adventure. Choose from a day trek or a multi-day trek and venture into the wild to discover glistening oases, resilient flora and the enormous Dunes of Erg Chebbi. The climate may be inhospitable, but the same can’t be said for desert dwellers. Assisted by camels, trek to a traditional Berber camp and be welcomed by open arms and a mint tea, ready to light a fire and spend the night under the stars.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

The High Atlas Mountains run south-west through Morocco. They are remote, barren and absolutely stunning. Our challenge is to climb their highest peak – and the highest in North Africa: Mount Toubkal, at 4167m.

Our ascent is tough, steep and rocky, and the effects of being at altitude add to the challenge. However, the magnificent views from the summit – reaching across to the Sahara Desert – and our sense of achievement more than compensate for our efforts.

We also witness the local way of life as we pass through colourful villages, where Berbers farm in the river valleys and herd goats and sheep in the mountains. The ancient city of Marrakesh, with its labyrinthine streets and intriguing souks, provides the perfect contrast. More info visit
