PISCINE TIOUT
Tiout’s huge, unheated, stream-fed swimming pool sits beside a palm grove. Divided into two sections: one measuring 30m x 40m and the other 25m x 30m, one area is shallow and the other deep enough to dive from a 5m wall. The water was naturally clear and fresh; we saw an army of frogs blithely floating by the steps leading into the pool; their protruding eyes surveying the fun around them. Children’s laughter filled the air as they jumped, dived and played, while others sat around chatting.
Busy on a Sunday afternoon, so we came back on Monday morning to have the place to ourselves. No lifeguards. One hour 45 minute drive from Agadir.
We stayed at MAISON D’HÔTES OASIS DE TIOUT. A beautifully designed hotel and gardens. Rooms and communal areas were spotlessly clean and the view from the roof was magnificent.

JARJEER MULE AND DONKEY REFUGE
On the outskirts of Marrakech lies a remarkable story of compassion and dedication. Octogenarian couple Charles Hantom and Susan Machin have spent over three decades rescuing horses, donkeys and mules that have been abandoned, injured, or mistreated. The sanctuary’s success is largely attributed to its collaboration with local villagers, who play a vital role in rescue efforts. Ayoub, a local, developed his own method of treating injured animals using traditional Amazigh splints and honey. The sanctuary receives individual donations from overseas, enabling them to continue their vital work. We visited the women-run café and enjoyed vegan chilli and veggie spaghetti bolognaise. Call in advance to arrange your visit. Susan was awarded an OBE for services to equine welfare in Morocco in 2024.

PLAGE TAOUSSARTE (700 STEPS).
This secluded beach requires a challenging 40-minute hike through untamed countryside, followed by a descent of 700 steep steps. These steps had originally been carved out by local Amazigh communities to access the coast for fishing and trade. Although the journey was demanding, it rewarded us with a gorgeous coastal retreat set against a dramatic backdrop of headlands and towering mountains. A large rock stood defiantly in the water about 20 metres from the shore, while the beach itself was made up of large grey pebbles with a steep incline leading into the sea. Water shoes are advisable for navigating the stony shoreline. The beach’s strong waves made it a popular destination for experienced swimmers and adventurous beachgoers. Camping permitted. Remember the ascent up the 700 steps is harder than the descent.
Wild Guide Morocco is out now. Available in bookshops and from online retailers. Links in bio.

Moroccan food is always fresh and delicious. If you’re looking for authentic Moroccan food in London, look no further than - reviews of Moroccan restaurants, cafeś, street vendors, patisseries - all in one place.
Tagines are an integral part of the cuisine, featuring a variety of styles such as chicken, vegetable, beef with prunes, lamb, and more. If you’re by the sea, expect freshly grilled fish and prawns. In the mountainous areas, particularly in the south where the soil isn’t fertile enough for cattle, chicken or lamb tagines are the staples, all prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and traditional home-cooking methods. Bread is a key component of the Moroccan diet, used in place of utensils to scoop food from the shared tagine pot. However, in rural and mountain areas restaurants and cafés are harder to find. Breakfast in Morocco is hearty, typically including fresh orange juice, bread, honey, jams, olives, olive oil and mint tea or coffee. Sugar is usually added to tea and orange juice. If you don’t want it or would prefer to add your own say: bla suker (without sugar). If you find a café with large stewing pots outside, don’t hesitate to eat there. These local eateries serve a variety of rich and flavourful bean and lentil stews, providing a delicious alternative to tagines. In some towns, fried fish is offered by weight in cafés and in our experience, a cheap, tasty and filling option. Vegetarians will find vegetable tagines and stews. For those who are lactose intolerant, dairy is not a significant part of the Moroccan diet, as most dishes are prepared using high-quality olive oil. Honey holds a special place in Moroccan cuisine, particularly in its many regional varieties such as wild thyme, orange blossom, and eucalyptus, each offering a unique flavour profile. Honey enhances traditional dishes such as rfissa, a spiced chicken stew with lentils and fenugreek.
