You Live in Paradise. Why Are You Still Exhausted? — ALINA DABEK | Health & Performance Consultant | Nutritionist 28/04/2026

I moved to Mauritius wanting to catch a breath.
Oh boy, did I catch it.
What I didn't expect was to stand in a supermarket queue absolutely furious at a cashier who was doing absolutely nothing wrong.
That moment taught me more about my own nervous system than years of training did.

My latest article is about the connection most people miss, between blood sugar, chronic stress, identity and why ambitious people keep pushing through even when their body is clearly asking them to stop.

If you've ever wondered why you're exhausted despite doing everything "right", this one's for you.

I work with a lot of people like this.

The 38-year-old entrepreneur here in Mauritius who knows he needs to eat differently for his health, but by Friday night he's unwinding —curry, whisky, the weekend loosening up.
Come Monday morning, he's pushing a truck uphill. His body feels heavy. His mind isn't sharp.

He's wondering why decisions feel harder, why he's snapping at people more, why his nervous system feels like it's in constant protection mode.

Then there's the executive woman managing a team, a household, and her side projects.

She eats salads at her desk during the day, proud of her discipline.
But by evening—whether it's wine to dampen the hunger she's been ignoring, or more food than she intended—she's negotiating with herself.

Her body feels sluggish. Her brain feels foggy.

She's feeling behind on everything, even though she's doing more than most. Her relationship with her partner is comfortable, but there's resentment building underneath. Not drama.
Just... a slow erosion of connection.

They're not undisciplined. They're caught.

Caught between knowing & doing.

And that gap?

It costs something every single day.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐩:

- Your body feels heavy instead of light.
- Your brain stays foggy instead of sharp.
- You feel behind—in your work, in your goals, in who you wanted to become.
- Your closest relationships stay comfortable but not thriving. Resentment builds quietly.
- Your nervous system lives in protection mode instead of opening up to what's possible.

So what happens next is predictable.
You try to close the gap with 𝐨𝐧𝐞-𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐬:

- A therapist session, hoping it sticks.
- A nutritionist consultation that gives you a meal plan.
- A weekend escape to "reset" and run away from the routine that's making you sluggish.
- Another supplement stack promising the breakthrough.
- Another Monday restart.

And here's the thing, on your own, you can probably last Monday through Friday.

You can Muay-Thai kick through it.
But the weekend hits, your nervous system needs release, and the whole thing unravels again.

This is where 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬.

It treats change like a one-time fix.
But real change doesn't work that way.

My Mondays are always the most powerful.
That's when people come in and suddenly everything surfaces—what actually happened over the weekend, where they compromised, what triggered them, where their old patterns crept back in.

That's where the real work begins.

Because when we work over time,
when there's consistency, accountability, and a trained practitioner helping you see the patterns,
that's when your environment actually starts supporting your goals. That’s when your likelihood of succeeding increases.

That's when the standards you're building don't collapse on the weekend.

That's when your nervous system learns to regulate instead of protect.

That's when you start becoming who you actually want to be.

Information alone doesn't create change.

Everyone knows what to do.
ChatGPT can tell you what to do.
Huberman or Diary of a CEO podcast “expert” can give you advice.
But it won’t be personalised.
It won’t know what YOU actually need.
It won’t make YOU DO the hard thing you’re avoiding.

The gap between knowing and actually doing comes down to two things:
your behaviour patterns linked to the identity you embody and the environment supporting —or undermining— those patterns.

If you're tired of knowing what to do and still not getting there,
DM me "RESET" - or Book a Free Discovery Call (link in bio)
and let's figure out what's actually holding you back.

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a beautifully hosted event by the Japanese Embassy here in Mauritius.

Thoughtful, elegant and with an abundance of great quality food - you know the kind that makes you feel good after eating. Unusual for a networking evening, but it really was a reflection of culture, attention to detail and care.

And yet, as with any networking event like this, which I’m sure you’ve experienced before, drinks were flowing, conversations were back-to-back.

And if you’ve ever paid attention, you would’ve noticed something interesting:

When you put yourself in an environment like that, how quickly you’re likely to give in.

Another drink because it’s there.
Filling up your plate, because you can.
Eating later than you normally would.
Staying “on” just a little longer than your body prefers.

Matching the environment.

I personally had one small toast, then drinking water.

Not from restriction, but from understanding what these environments do physiologically, and the personal standards I hold for myself.

Because even when it’s enjoyable… it’s still stimulation.

Late dinner. Alcohol. Mauritian heat. Constant engagement.
It doesn’t take much to tip your system.

You already know that the next morning you’ll need more coffee to clear that brain fog, more snacks or comfort food later in the day.
You might skip a workout too, just because you’re not feeling like it today.

Nothing dramatic. Just enough to notice.

And that’s the part most people miss.

It’s not the one event.

It’s how often you override your system to “stay in the room”.

What looks like “just networking” can still be perceived as stress.
And before you come at me - not all stress is bad.

But constantly layered on top of an already demanding career and home life?

That’s when you can slowly start to feel it:

Brain fog.
Irritability.
Puffy body.
Slower mornings.
Shorter fuse.

Giving in to your own (self-justifiable) excuses.
Things you consider as “normal” without questioning it.

This isn’t a discipline issue.
It’s the standards you unconsciously adjust to fit in.

As my mentor used to say:

𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴.
𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴.

And your environment will always try to reset those standards for you.

So the real question is - are your personal standards strong enough to hold in the rooms you choose to step into?

We’ve oversimplified metabolic health to a lazy narrative: 𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳, 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦.

Yet, I sit with individuals who are exercising regularly, eating “relatively well,” and thriving in demanding roles, yet they still show clear signs of metabolic dysfunction.

𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?

Glucose regulation isn’t just about what you eat; it’s about how your system behaves. As insulin resistance develops, many remain unaware until it’s too late. Elevated insulin levels indicate your body is compensating, and chronic hyperinsulinaemia drives fat accumulation, inflammation and progression toward type 2 diabetes.

Chronic stress exacerbates these issues, creating a vicious cycle of energy crashes and emotional turmoil. Many unknowingly confuse being emotional with nervous system dysregulation, not realizing how deeply their habits and feelings are intertwined with metabolic health.

But here’s the breakthrough:

What truly changes outcomes isn’t extreme diets or quick fixes. It’s precision & personalisation.

Getting to the root cause, stabilizing glucose variability, improving insulin sensitivity and reducing unnecessary physiological stress are the baseline to restoring metabolic health.

Consider this: diabetes is a leading cause of global mortality. The cumulative burden of Type 2 diabetes (T2D), including complications like cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and even amputations, is mounting relentlessly.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂?

T2D is increasingly prevalent among ambitious, high-performing professionals - often due to sedentary lifestyles, chronic work-related stress, and poor dietary habits that accompany demanding careers.

As a coach, I help individuals navigate their habits and emotions to foster lasting change - that's why a one-off session doesn't work in my approach.

You've been building habits for a long time, don't expect a miracle diet plan you fail to follow after 2 weeks.

If you’re functioning but not fully firing, experiencing inconsistent energy, mental fatigue, that stubborn weight and often being short-fused - pay attention. These are early signs of a system in distress.

I work with individuals who want to dig deep, understand what's happening beneath the surface, and correct it before it becomes an expensive pathology that affects the quality of life.

If you're ready to reclaim your vitality and optimise your health, let’s connect.

Together, we’ll create a tailored approach that helps you feel better in your body, gives you more skip in your stride, and allows you to be more present for yourself and your family.

If your belly fat is increasing while you’re “doing everything right,” you’re likely facing a cortisol and insulin issue, not a discipline problem.

You used to skip meals and run on coffee & croissant, feeling fine. But now?

You crash by mid-afternoon.
You can’t go long between meals without feeling shaky or foggy.
You’re tired all day but wired at night.
Sleep is off.
Your body is slowly holding more fat, especially around your middle. And it feels… sudden.

It’s not.

This is how metabolic dysfunction builds quietly, not with disease, but through subtle shifts, long before a diagnosis, long before “fatty liver” or “type 2 diabetes” enter the conversation.

Blood glucose becomes less stable.
Insulin rises to keep things in check.
Cells gradually stop responding as well as they should.
So, your body compensates.
Until it can’t.

This is especially common in women who are constantly dieting, under-fuelling or binge eating.

Energy crashes
Increased hunger and reliance on sugar or caffeine
Poor sleep
Reduced metabolic flexibility
Gradual central fat gain

Under the surface, insulin resistance is building.
Adipose tissue becomes dysregulated, releasing inflammatory signals.
Fat begins to accumulate centrally.

What was once efficient energy use becomes metabolic dysfunction.

Here’s the part no one talks about enough:
This can happen while you’re “trying to be healthy” - eating less, fasting for long hours, training more, sweating your your problems away in a spin class, pushing through fatigue and performing at work.

But a system under constant stress - physiological or psychological - will prioritise survival, not optimisation or "beach body" goals.

That "belly over the zip" might not just be from eating too much or drinking; it could be your safety response - a stress-adapted metabolism compensating for too long.

By the time you’re diagnosed, this process has usually built for years.

This is why prevention matters.

Not just to avoid disease, but to protect your energy, clarity, and the quality of your life - your health span.

If any of this starts making a bit more sense now and you want to get support, reach out to me to start your journey towards better health today.

Recently, I spoke with a (tired) prospective client about their idea of “switching off” after a hectic coffee-fuelled workday.

Here's how it goes:
playing padel, enjoying a glass of wine at dinner and then winding down with Netflix and endless scrolling.

Sounds normal, right?

That’s exactly the problem.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve normalised pushing through exhaustion, and anything slower than “go” started to feel uncomfortable.

So, what do we do?
We fill our days with movement, noise, caffeine and an ever-growing to-do list, and then we wonder why we can’t lose weight or maintain sharpness at work.

We’ve mistaken this chaos for success and it’s costing us, big time, in terms of our health and quality of life.

If you’re waking up tired after a full night’s sleep, battling brain fog by mid-morning, relying on sugar to survive the afternoon slump, struggle to sit still without reaching for your phone, maybe small things irritate you more than they should, you feel wired at night but exhausted all day…
That’s how you’re being robbed of the quality of your day-to-day life.

And then there’s the part no one openly talks about…

At home:
Your partner doesn’t get much of you.
You’re too drained to debrief about your day and too mentally tired to listen to theirs.
Your libido quietly disappears.
Connection becomes just another task.
You stop being partners and lovers, and instead, become two efficient adults managing logistics and falling asleep glued to your phones.

At work, you may find yourself sharper in bursts, but ultimately inconsistent. You snap quicker, miss important details and lose presence in conversations, drifting away in your thoughts.
Not because you’re incapable, but because your system is overloaded.

This is the hidden cost of “pushing through.”
It feels normal because everyone around us is doing the same, leading us to assume this is what ‘high performance’ and fulfilling your ambition should look like.

It isn’t.

True high performance means stable energy, clear thinking, emotional regulation and consistency that doesn’t crash by Wednesday.

It’s the capacity to hold without crashing daily.

And if you’ve nodded along while reading this, good. Awareness is the first step to change.
But action is what leads to transformation.

And let’s just be clear here: we can’t simply layer on meditation or the latest health fad on top of an overloaded system. We need to learn how to regulate ourselves to handle life’s demands without burning out.

This work is personal.

You need to start from where you are and build from there, whether it’s your nutrition, lifestyle choices, work environment, social circle, habits or boundaries. All of these factors have to be considered.

Here's the reflection I'd like to leave with today:
how do YOU measure your quality of life?

And what is your current lifestyle truly costing you?

03/04/2026

Living in beautiful Mauritius and working closely with ambitious individuals, I see firsthand how the pursuit of success often comes at a hidden cost.

These high achievers work hard, exercise regularly and eat “well,” yet many still experience that familiar afternoon energy crash.

You might think, "I’m doing everything right," but here’s the reality: even in our sunny paradise, we struggle with foundational issues.

I recently worked with a vitamin D deficient client who had clear indications on his blood panel of early metabolic disease. Despite stopping drinking and hitting the gym regularly, he felt frustrated as the weight stubbornly clung to his belly.

This situation reflects a larger issue as many people here are struggling with insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction and nervous system dysregulation.
(Fun fact - did you know that one in three adults in Mauritius is living with obesity and approx. 20% has diabetes?)

The truth is, being constantly switched on keeps your nervous system in a fight or flight mode. Chronic stress from juggling household responsibilities, work, social life and striving for fitness can leave you feeling overwhelmed. You might find yourself putting in more effort than ever - exercising and managing your diet - yet the weight doesn’t drop but your energy does.
Your business might be growing slower than your dependence on caffeine and other vices that keep you going.

When energy is dwindling, we dig to the root as usually something deeper is amiss.

Your blood sugar might be climbing hills and then falling without a warning, so you don’t just feel tired.
You are, at a cellular level, less efficient at producing and delivering energy.

Ask yourself: 𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲?

Your health is not just about how clean you eat or how much you exercise. You can eat well and still struggle to absorb nutrients, and excessive exercise can further stress your system.

That’s where functional nutrition, lifestyle changes, and emotional work along with identity, habit and boundary upgrades can make a significant difference and help you break free from the wheel of exhaustion.

Cultivate long-term health, not short-term survival.

If you find yourself in this cycle and want to improve your energy, let’s connect. We can design a personalised approach to restore your metabolic health and optimise your performance.

Thrive, not just survive.
