KORFBALL GAINS MOMENTUM IN MALAWI AS CENTRAL REGION TOURNAMENT DRAWS TALENT
Korfball, an emerging sport in Malawi, continues to gain momentum following a successful Central Region tournament held on Saturday, April 4 at the Kamuzu Institute for Sports.
Organised by the Korfball Association of Malawi, the tournament brought together teams and players as part of preparations for the upcoming international games scheduled for September 2026.
The event was initially planned to take place in Thyolo but was relocated to Lilongwe due to the recent fuel price increase, which affected travel logistics.
The primary objective of the tournament was to identify and scout top talent to represent Malawi at the international competition, which is expected to feature teams from across Southern Africa.
However, one of the coaches, Getrude Mwandira, expressed concern over player availability, noting that many athletes were committed to other sporting activities.
“We need help to get players motivated and engaged,” said Mwandira, appealing for increased sponsorship and support.
Central Region Committee Chairperson, Chrispin John, echoed the call, emphasizing the sport’s growth potential.
“Korfball has growth potential, but we need logistical support from well-wishers,” he said.
In the competition, Sniper emerged as the champions, taking home a prize of MK50,000, while Flash Flyers finished as runners-up and received MK30,000.
The association has since expressed optimism ahead of the September international tournament, which is expected to attract teams from Namibia, Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Egypt.
