NAP Commends Police for Foiling Armed Robbery at Mbowe Filling Station.
The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has commended the Malawi Police Service for a professional and intelligence-led operation that foiled an armed robbery at Mbowe Filling Station in Lilongwe on January 10, 2026.
NAP said the operation demonstrated effective policing through decisive action based on credible intelligence while ensuring the safety of civilians and avoiding loss of life.
Speaking on the matter, NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe described the incident as a clear example of policing done right, marked by discipline, restraint, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
Kondowe noted that the successful intervention reaffirmed the principle that public safety and respect for human rights are complementary obligations of the State rather than competing interests.
The advocacy group said the incident has strengthened public confidence in the Malawi Police Service, particularly for citizens who frequent vulnerable public spaces such as fuel stations and ATM points.
NAP National Coordinator Baxton Nkhoma said the operation demonstrated that the Malawi Police Service possesses the skills and operational capacity to effectively discharge its constitutional mandate despite existing resource challenges.
Nkhoma further called on police leadership to formally recognise and reward the officers involved in the operation as a way of promoting professionalism, courage, and accountability within the service.
According to NAP, the Mbowe operation presents an important opportunity for the new police management to institutionalise best practices and reposition the Malawi Police Service as a professional and people-centred institution.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting lawful, accountable, and rights-respecting policing that promotes peace, stability, and safety for all Malawians

Mozambique and Malawi Strengthen Cooperation in Correctional Services
Mozambique and Malawi are taking major steps to deepen collaboration in the management of correctional services, as both countries work to address shared challenges within their prison systems.
Speaking to PL FM, Malawi Prison Service (MPS) spokesperson Stevie Meke confirmed that a high-level delegation from Mozambique’s Penitentiary Services was in Malawi last week for a series of bilateral engagements.
The visiting delegation held strategic meetings with senior officials from MPS, focusing on areas where the two countries can support one another.
According to Meke, discussions centered on addressing long-standing issues such as prison overcrowding, which continues to strain correctional facilities in both nations.
The two sides also explored practical strategies for improving safe custody procedures, strengthening rehabilitation programs, and enhancing the reintegration of inmates back into society.
Another key topic was the management of foreign nationals held in their respective prisons.
Meke said both countries are looking for more efficient ways to handle cross-border detention cases, with the aim of improving cooperation, speeding up communication, and ensuring that inmates receive proper support while in custody.
He emphasized that the engagement marks an important step toward building a more coordinated regional approach to correctional services, particularly at a time when criminal activities increasingly transcend borders.
Further details on the outcomes of the discussions, including planned joint initiatives, are expected to be released as the two countries continue their dialogue.

The Government of Malawi, with support from the African Development Bank, has conducted a gap analysis to assess the country’s current e-commerce policy, strategy, and its legal, regulatory, and institutional frameworks.
The analysis aims to provide clear strategic direction and guidance for the development of a comprehensive national e-commerce policy and regulatory framework.
Speaking in Blantyre on Wednesday during a pre-validation training on key policy, strategy, legal, regulatory, and institutional components of e-commerce, Ezron Chirambo, a Trade Officer in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism specializing in trade policy and industrial development, highlighted the significance of the initiative.
In an interview with PL FM and GD TV, Chirambo emphasized that the pre-validation training is expected to strengthen Malawi’s digital trade landscape and shape the country’s economic future.
“E-commerce is creating new opportunities for technological advancement, the emergence of new sectors, and the enhancement of trade, in line with Malawi’s 2063 development agenda,” he said.
Chirambo added that for Malawi to build a vibrant and globally competitive economy that supports a homegrown development agenda—anchored on a sound e-commerce system—there is a need to remove barriers affecting the digital economy, including issues such as online fraud.
Meanwhile, Dr. Thokozani James Ngwira, a trade law expert working under ESAMI TRAPCA, explained that the gap analysis will help address several challenges that have hindered Malawi from fully harnessing digital economy opportunities, including obstacles related to business registration and liability on digital platforms.
