MWANANGANI ALBUM REVIEW

SIFE, broke the musical matrix when she dropped her debut album- Mwanangani. From a little morsel of Yao I know, I think it means “there are stories” in English. A SIFE top fan like me was supposed to jump into feasting this album headlong and instantly. That weekend had other plans. I failed, sorry SIFE. The next Monday, I redeemed myself I made time for this musical fruit. I munched it I as trekked home from work in Zomba’s gathering dusk. I plugged my headsets immersed myself the musical experience.
INUYO
A sad song artfully laid on a smooth Passada beat. A marriage of beautiful voice and raw message. I love it. In this one SIFE speaks through a molested girl, a victim of parental greed. A mother allows a grown to man sleep with her underaged child for money. It is raw. You can feel pain of the abused girl. This song raises awareness of the plight of abused girls who suffer at the hands of greedy parents. I love how the sax enriches this song. Again, the twisting of SIFE’s voice with vocal effects is unnecessary. The effects were a fly in this otherwise pristine musical oil.
MWANANGA.
Beautiful storytelling. I love how the Sax festoons this song. Beat selection. A manganje beat, a motherly figure is talking to her adopted child. I love its originality. Her musical identity is not pummeled by low self -esteem.

APAWO
Songwriting towers over other aspects on SIFE’s part. I love the richness that the shaker and live guitar bring to this. Macluther’ s varied singing to this song is both a plus and minus. A plus, it breaks the monotony. Minus, it sounds playful therefore going against the seriousness of the theme. I am not sure if I love his forced rhymes. This, for me, was supposed to be somewhat a contemplative song. Apart from that I love the seamless vocal blending.
KOLOLO
A love song where two lovers retell their story and celebrate love. It is danceable beat. There is a familiar drum that is marring my enjoyment. It sounds a little cliched. Like it was picked from a familiar song and grafted in this one. That said, I love the Izulu element she sprinkles in the song.

APAPA
A largely yawo song. Of the about two neighbours. From the little Yao I know, the neighbour has wrecked a happy marriage. Nambo liso linu likulora kwa unewa. (Your eye is on my husband) The persona sings out her heartbreak over this. I love how she switches from Chichewa to Yao with ease. I am crushing on the hook. Catchy. A promising wedding anthem.
AMAKULIRA
The whole review of this song would have just have just been summed it in fewest words-I love it. But that would not have been an honest review because it would have ignored a de ja vu feeling this song stirs in me. Some elements of it sound like that of the late Tremour’s Golide. They share common traits. Not that I am complaining, I love it. Which increases my dilemma on which song I should pick as my favourite song because this is one of them. I love its beat selection, love message and love the singing. A sad song addressing a person who is accusing their own mum of witchcraft simply for being old. I do not think she needed to twist her voice. Those injected playfulness in an otherwise serious song. That is the only thing I did not love. This is one of my flawless songs in the album.
MWANA WANU
A song from the perspective of a girl who has lost a mother. One of the moving pieces in this album. She is talking to a dead mum. Telling her how much she leaves and misses her. The song writing and the handling of tone is awesome.
IWEYO
A love story. A soft danceable afro song. It’s a song moving on one gear from the start to the end. It sounds emotionally dry. Aloof.
SIMATHERO
A song for the rejected, the framed, the hopeless. The song is basically saying this is not the end. Like Iweyo, no much is happening. The beat is basic. A flat song.

ADYEKO
In Adyeko, the persona reminiscences about her upbringing. A celebratory song about miracles parents performed to make sure that the family is fed. Song writing is the highest element about this song. I like the whistling too.
AMINA
One of the richest instrumentally. A bilingual song, I think in this one of the songs, SIFE was given enough freedom to express herself fully. It sounds so effortless. My other beloved song in this album. A song cheering up a depressed Amina. Tonthola Amina.

VILEKEKE
The song rebukes people who mark boundaries on lives of others also barks at oppressors. If I say this is the song I will listen to the whole day then truth is not in me. In this one, SIFE penmanship takes a brief vacation.
RIFULEKITA
I love everything about this song: The choice of the beat, the singing the message and the creativity. The concept is fresh. Both SIFE and Keturah handle the tone with dexterity. I love the rich blend of instruments. You can easily tell this is an African song. The ululations, the strings. The A- A -A. If SIFE is marking a musical path, Rifulekita is the way. It is my most flawless. This the most impressive of all features I have listened to. Dingopeza Rifulekita madalitso Ambuye adzindionera patali.
CHAONA
I love it. Scores highly in repeatability. Beat selection, fresh song writing and yes, the singing. SIFE can sing this one in her sleep, she makes singing sound simple. Another of my flawless in this album. I can listen to this on heavy repeat. This is an adventurous musical trip I was looking in Simathero. Simathero and Vilekeke should have taken notes from Chaona lol.
MAKE MELIFA
I have written a lot about this song. Rifulekita and this one can be stamped as my most flawless song by SIFE.
As I close, I close with a smile on my face and hope in my heart that SIFE is a special voice, an excellent song writer destined for a musical Everest. She has delivered in her singing and songwriting. When we meet SIFE, we should put on shades for her musical future is too bright. I cannot go without rebuking (as brotherly as possible) those one who attempted to twist her voice with some audio effects. That was as important as K on Knight. SIFE’ voice is enough, thank you.
