The thing about this city is that it never depresses me. On the dreariest of days, in the dingiest of neighborhoods, I never get that sinking feeling. Because it's always good. Always feels alive. How is that possible?

I got the heartbreaking news that this lovely man was take from us due to complications with COVID.
Honestly I'm angry that he's gone and angry that I couldn't be at the market those weeks before to see him one last time and angry at this pandemic.
He was the first person at the market to make me feel seen - when he handed me an artichoke flower as a little gift with my order.
We will miss you Rafa. I promise to do my best to keep your market alive for a long time to come.

This labor intensive agricultural technique is used in the chinampas to grow seedlings 🌱
The mud you see is dredged from the bottom of the canals and spread in a shallow rectangle ditch. Then it's cut into tiny squares, one for each seed.

And life is suddenly better. While service is a little different, Doña Emi's is back in action and someone (this gal) couldn't be happier.
