Curanderas sin Fronteras

Curanderas sin Fronteras Dedicated to serving the health and well-being of our communities through traditional medicine. On that day, Curanderas sin Fronteras was born.

In 2013 a group of women came together to study with Atava Garcia-Swiecicki, who was offering a class called "The Curandera's Toolkit." Within the class a smaller core group instantly connected in a powerful way. The women, all with a strong calling to reclaim ancestral and indigenous healing modalities, birthed the idea of a mobile clinic that would go to the people. This mobile clinic would offer healing traditions that were familiar and effective based on plants, spirit, and community. In August of 2013, we purchased the Oakland Free Clnic Trailer from Jamie Menzel, who was headed northbound. Curanderas sin Fronteras is an East Bay grassroots women’s collective dedicated to serving the health and well-being of our communities through traditional medicine. We draw from our respective indigenous healing traditions, which includes the use of herbs, limpias (energy cleanse), platicas (talks), and massage to promote wellness. We aim to serve at risk populations while also providing space for new learning. Our services are donation-based and no one is turned away for lack of funds. Aside from our own family traditions and individual training, member’s of the collective draw from a particular curandera lineage that includes: Dona Enriqueta from Oaxaca, Estela Roman from Temixco, and Atava Garcia-Swiecicki. If you would like to provide a donation to make services available to more people, please contact Sandra M. Pacheco at [email protected]. Soon we will also have a list of "wish items" that we could use to ensure smooth operations! Members of our collective are:
Gavy Castillo
Karrin Chiefetz
Berenice Dimas
Diana Garcia
Atava Garcia-Swiecicki (advisor)
Napaquetzalli Martinez
Sandra M. Pacheco
Angelica Rodriguez
Lilia Roman

Commemorating 534 years of Indigenous resistance.
This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the annual Alcatraz sunrise gathering honors the courage and vision of our leaders who reclaimed Alcatraz as Indian Land.
We honor the Alcatraz veterans, warriors, elders, and families whose courage helped ignite a movement for Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and self-determination.

We gather in recognition of their sacrifices and the generations who continue this work protecting our culture, lands, waters, ceremonies, and inherent Indigenous rights.
We are still here, and we continue to carry the movement forward.

Join me for "Introduction to Curanderismo"
Sunday, August 23 - 10 am to noon Pacific

Together we’ll explore and discuss the history, roots, and practices of Curanderismo and learn about the role of the curandero/a as healer and guide and how one is called to this path; cultural practices such as spiritual cleansings, limpias, the aspects of the human body from the Mexika world view, how colonialism affected and continues to affect its understanding and practice; and how empirical observation and sacrifices of thousands of traditional healers over hundreds of years have preserved its ceremonies and knowledge, and the blend of spirit, plant medicine, limpias, and energy work that has carried this tradition through time to us today.

Curanderismo is a specific, culturally rooted expression of traditional medicine ways that, in Maestra Grace’s cultural healing practice, comes from Mexico and blends Indigenous and Mesoamerican cosmology, customs, and practices. For other practitioners, it may be blended with Spanish Catholicism and/or Sephardic or African diasporic influence.

A curandera/curandero/curandere uses cultural tools to help determine the cause of and to treat conditions that straddle the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual, among them:
* susto (soul loss from trauma and fright),
* mal de ojo (powerful gaze that may affect others on a spiritual or energetic aspect),
* empacho (energetic-digestive blockage)

Learn more about this powerful ancestral healing tradition on:
