🌊 MEXICO JUST COMMITTED MORE THAN 2 BILLION PESOS TO SAVE ITS BEACHES — AND ANOTHER COUNTRY IS ALREADY ASKING TO BUY THE TECHNOLOGY 🇲🇽

She could have watched it on television.

Instead, in mid-July, President Claudia Sheinbaum climbed into a Navy helicopter with the Secretary of the Marina and flew the coastline herself — from Tulum to Puerto Morelos — looking down at the brown tide swallowing some of the most beautiful beaches on Earth.

Then she made a promise. Fifteen days. A full national plan in fifteen days.

On July 30, at the Mañanera in Palacio Nacional, she kept it. ⏱️

Here is what she was looking at.

2026 has been the worst sargassum season ever recorded in the Mexican Caribbean. On its heaviest days, more than 90,500 tons of the algae drift through these waters — 27 times the historical average. About 10% of it lands on Quintana Roo's shores. By late June, 92.5% of the state's beaches were rated "excessive." Some had to be closed entirely. 😳

And this was never just about pretty photos.

Governor Mara Lezama has said it plainly: managing sargassum costs Quintana Roo roughly 11% of its entire state economy — around 2 billion dollars a year. Riviera Maya hotels spend about 150 million dollars annually just raking it off the sand. By July 28, crews had already pulled 95,504 tons off the beaches. Officials expect 119,000 tons before the year ends, past last year's record of 96,000.

Behind every one of those numbers is a family. The boat captains. The servers. The housekeepers. The guides. The taco stand owners whose whole week rises and falls with the tide. 💚

So Mexico answered. And it answered big.

More than 2 BILLION pesos committed, with 768.7 million released in the first stage this year. Navy Minister Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles laid out the machinery, and President Sheinbaum broke the strategy into three simple steps:

1️⃣ Stop it at sea. Two new tugboats and six coastal sargassum harvesters to intercept the algae before it ever reaches the sand — because once it hits the beach, removing it drags the sand away with it.

2️⃣ Build a wall of water. Fifty kilometers of containment barriers — in the President's own words, the best barrier technology available anywhere in the world.

3️⃣ Clean what gets through. Upgraded collection equipment, following environmental standards designed to protect the shoreline from erosion.

The focus: Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Mahahual — five zones, 40 to 50 kilometers of the beaches that carry Mexico's tourism heart. ⚓

And Quintana Roo is not sitting back waiting for help. The state has put in 770 million pesos of its own, including a monitoring center that watches 140 beaches by satellite at the same time. 🛰️

But here is the part that should make every Mexican sit up straight. 🇲🇽

Mexico is not just throwing the seaweed away.

Environment Secretary Alicia Bárcena revealed there are now 198 initiatives across the country turning sargassum into something useful. Thirty-nine companies are already producing from it — biogas, bioethanol, sodium alginate, biofertilizers, plastic lumber, laminates, biocarbon, paints, bioplastics. Eleven of them have real industrial-scale potential.

And Puerto Morelos has now been declared Mexico's first Circular Economy Development Hub — 39.9 hectares where the sargassum the Navy pulls from the sea gets turned into product instead of buried in a landfill.

Turning a problem into an industry. Turning a burden into jobs. ♻️

Then came the sentence nobody expected.

Bárcena confirmed that the Dominican Republic is considering buying a sargassum vessel from Mexico. 🌎

Read that again. A Caribbean nation facing the exact same crisis looked around the world for a solution — and turned to Mexico.

Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez has stated the goal outright: to make Mexico the international benchmark. She argues that no other country has combined offshore collection, beach cleaning AND full industrial use of the algae into a single strategy.

And Mexico is confident enough to put that to the test in public. On October 1 and 2, Mexico will host an international summit with the Caribbean nations living through the same crisis — and with Japan, which may bring solutions of its own.

The Caribbean is a shared sea. Florida has it. Barbados has it. The Dominican Republic has it. Scientists point to warmer oceans, more nutrients and longer sun exposure driving the surge everywhere.

But Mexico is the one building the blueprint. And when it works, the rest of the world will be studying it.

From the deck of a Navy ship to a laboratory in Puerto Morelos, Mexicans are proving something they have proven a thousand times before: give them a problem, and they will build something out of it. 🇲🇽 💚🤍❤️

Cancún's white sand is worth fighting for. And Mexico is fighting.

PUBLIC NOTICE TO THE PLAYA DEL CARMEN COMMUNITY

Chenzubul, Public Beach Access, Environmental Protection, and the Truth

The people of Playa del Carmen deserve the full truth before being asked to support any petition portraying Rodrigo Garcidueñas Vega as the legitimate guardian or protector of Chenzubul.

A Change.org campaign is now being used to create the appearance that his authority over this property is legitimate and uncontested. It is not.

Multiple federal and administrative investigations concerning activities associated with Chenzubul remain open:

These investigation numbers are facts—not rumors or speculation. Authorities have received photographs, videos, maps, witness statements, and documentary evidence concerning alleged environmental contamination, wastewater disposal, unauthorized construction, occupation of the property, commercial rentals, obstruction of public access, intimidation, and violence associated with this land.

An independent investigation published by Sol Quintana Roo reports that Rodrigo Garcidueñas Vega initiated civil proceedings seeking to obtain rights over Chenzubul through usucapión (adverse possession). The article also reports that an earlier proceeding did not result in him being declared an occupant for that purpose and that a subsequent proceeding was later filed.

The same investigation reports that the registered owner of the property is Cantex Enterprises and describes allegations that unfinished structures have been used to house people in exchange for payment. It further reports allegations that human waste generated by occupants of Chenzubul and the neighboring Oasis Maya area has been discharged into the coastal aquifer and mangrove ecosystem.

These are serious allegations that are currently the subject of official governmental attention. They cannot simply be dismissed by branding an occupation as “environmental protection” or by collecting signatures through an online petition.

The Community Has the Right to Ask:

• What legal document authorizes Rodrigo Garcidueñas Vega to administer Chenzubul?
• What legal authority allows him to collect money from people living there?
• Who authorized the construction and rental of residential units on the property?
• Where has the wastewater and sewage from those occupants been discharged for the past twelve years?
• What environmental permits and sanitation systems are in place?
• Why is someone presenting himself publicly as the protector of Chenzubul while also reportedly pursuing legal ownership or control of the same property?
• Why was public access to Playa 72 (Dog Beach) recently blocked by a fence erected from this property?

The people of Playa del Carmen answered that last question themselves.

The community came together, rejected the obstruction, and restored public access to Dog Beach. That confrontation demonstrates just how far this conflict has escalated.

Public beaches belong to the public.

No individual has the right to decide who may or may not access Playa 72.

This statement is not against conservation.

It is a call for genuine conservation based on transparency, legality, environmental responsibility, and respect for public access.

No person should be accepted as the guardian of environmentally sensitive land simply because they repeatedly claim that title.

Legitimate stewardship requires legal authority, environmental compliance, financial transparency, proper wastewater management, and accountability to the community.

We Encourage Every Resident to Ask Questions.

Before signing or sharing the Change.org petition, ask to see the legal documentation authorizing anyone to administer or control this property.

Ask where the wastewater goes.

Ask whether proper environmental permits exist.

Ask why multiple federal investigations remain active.

Ask why these investigations are never disclosed to the public when signatures are being collected.

If you have photographs, videos, witness information, or other evidence concerning environmental contamination, obstruction of public access, threats, assaults, fires, or other activities affecting Chenzubul, preserve that evidence and provide it directly to the appropriate authorities.

The future of Playa del Carmen’s mangroves depends upon transparency—not slogans.

The future of Chenzubul should be decided through lawful environmental protection, not public relations campaigns.

Protect the mangroves. Protect public access. Demand transparency. Cooperate with investigators. And make informed decisions based on facts—not incomplete narratives.

La comunidad de Playa del Carmen merece conocer toda la verdad antes de apoyar cualquier petición que presente a Rodrigo Garcidueñas Vega como el legítimo guardián o protector de Chenzubul.

El artículo también informa que un procedimiento anterior no concluyó con el reconocimiento de su ocupación para ese propósito y que posteriormente se promovió un nuevo procedimiento.

La misma investigación informa que el propietario registrado del predio es Cantex Enterprises y describe señalamientos de que estructuras inconclusas han sido utilizadas para alojar personas a cambio de un pago. Asimismo, reporta denuncias de que los desechos humanos generados por los ocupantes de Chenzubul y de la zona vecina de Oasis Maya han sido descargados al acuífero costero y al ecosistema de manglar.

PROFEPA ha abierto formalmente una denuncia ambiental relacionada con los daños continuos, la contaminación y las actividades ilegales denunciadas en la zona conocida como Pulmón Verde y Oasis Maya, en Colosio.

Esto ya no es simplemente un conflicto de propiedad.

Recientemente ocurrió un incendio de gran magnitud en la esquina de la Avenida 5 con Calle 72, en la esquina noroeste junto al dog park, dentro de esta misma zona costera en disputa conectada con Oasis Maya / Pulmón Verde.

Múltiples estructuras fueron consumidas por el fuego.

Si el viento hubiera cambiado aunque fuera un poco, el incendio podría haberse extendido a través de los manglares, cruzando las áreas protegidas de humedales, hasta Coco Beach, los negocios vecinos e incluso hasta el Reef Hotel.

Piénsenlo bien.

Todo un ecosistema costero protegido pudo haberse incendiado.

Vida silvestre.
Manglares.
Áreas de anidación.
Sistemas naturales de agua.
Negocios.
Vidas humanas.

Todo.

Esto es exactamente el desastre que muchos llevamos más de un año advirtiendo a las autoridades.

Durante meses se han presentado denuncias formales, fotografías, coordenadas, mapas, videos, testimonios y reportes directos ante Ministerio Público, autoridades ambientales, oficinas municipales y dependencias federales.

Esta ya es la CUARTA escalación formal.

Durante años, este predio ha sido sometido a ocupación ilegal, abuso ambiental, bloqueo de acceso, intimidación, agresiones físicas y la disposición inadecuada de desechos humanos directamente dentro del ecosistema de manglares.

Durante aproximadamente 12 años, se ha permitido la acumulación de desechos humanos sin drenaje legal, sin infraestructura sanitaria y sin protección ambiental. La contaminación fluye directamente hacia una de las zonas ecológicas más sensibles de Playa del Carmen.

Esto no es administración.

Esto es destrucción ambiental.

Rodrigo García Dueñas se presentó falsamente como si tuviera autoridad legal sobre este terreno y utilizó esas falsas representaciones para atraer negocios y personas bajo engaños y fraude.

Falsa autoridad.
Falsas promesas.
Falsa legitimidad.

Bahia Divers fue inducida a trasladar operaciones, equipo e inversión significativa a ese predio con base en un contrato de ocho páginas que finalmente resultó no tener ningún valor, porque la supuesta autoridad legal detrás de ese contrato simplemente no existía.

Lo creímos porque se nos mostraron negocios aparentemente legítimos ya operando ahí, incluyendo una escuela de kitesurf que supuestamente llevaba más de siete años funcionando desde ese lugar.

Nos dijeron:

“Mira, ellos están aquí, están operando, todo es legal, ustedes también van a prosperar aquí.”

Esa representación fue falsa.

Esos negocios fueron utilizados como parte del engaño para generar falsa confianza y provocar una inversión económica importante.

Fuimos engañados.
Nos mintieron.
Y se entregó una cantidad considerable de dinero, suficiente incluso para financiar mejoras mayores de infraestructura, incluyendo un sistema completamente nuevo de paneles solares y energía para múltiples unidades dentro del predio.

Mientras tanto, siguen existiendo preguntas muy serias:

¿Cómo se permite que negocios sin licencias y sin seguros continúen operando dentro de una zona ecológica en disputa?

¿Dónde está PROFECO?

¿Dónde está la supervisión?

Si un turista, residente o visitante resulta lesionado ahí, ¿quién responde?

¿Quién asume la responsabilidad?

¿Quién responde cuando no existe seguro, no existen permisos legales y no existe supervisión regulatoria legítima?

Esto no es solamente fraude.

Esto es una falla grave de seguridad pública.

Desde que se cuestionó esta falsa legitimidad y se rechazó participar en actividades irregulares, ha existido:

• Pérdida de acceso a propiedad privada
• Daños económicos
• Hostigamiento e intimidación
• Agresiones físicas
• Violencia contra miembros de la comunidad
• Personas mayores agredidas dentro de espacios comerciales
• Represalias constantes contra cualquiera que desafíe este control ilegal

Esto afecta mucho más que a un solo negocio.

Biólogos, botánicos, conservacionistas, proyectos de abejas, huertos comunitarios y esfuerzos de restauración ambiental han sido expulsados.

Personas que intentaban proteger esta tierra han sido amenazadas, intimidadas y obligadas a irse.

Mientras tanto:

Continúa la ocupación ilegal.
Continúa la violencia.
Continúa la contaminación.
Y ahora—fuego.

Basta.

Si alguien dice estar “protegiendo” los manglares mientras permite contaminación, violencia, ocupación ilegal, fraude y riesgo de incendio dentro de ellos, no está protegiendo absolutamente nada.

Lo está destruyendo.

La comunidad está observando.

La comunidad está hablando.

Y no vamos a guardar silencio.

¿Vamos a esperar a que desaparezcan los manglares?

This is no longer just a property dispute.

This is now a serious and immediate threat to the mangroves, protected wetlands, neighboring businesses, public safety, and the entire Coco Beach / Pulmón Verde ecosystem.

A major fire recently broke out at 5th Avenue and 72nd Street, on the northwest corner by the dog park, inside this same disputed coastal zone connected to Oasis Maya / Pulmón Verde.

Multiple structures were consumed by flames.

If the wind had shifted only slightly, the fire could have spread through the mangroves, across protected wetland areas, all the way to Coco Beach, neighboring businesses, and even the Reef Hotel.

Let that sink in.

An entire protected coastal ecosystem could have burned.

Wildlife. Mangroves. Nesting areas. Natural water systems. Businesses. Lives.

Gone.

This is exactly the disaster many of us have been warning authorities about for over a year.

For months, formal complaints, photographs, coordinates, maps, videos, witness statements, and direct reports have been repeatedly submitted to Ministerio Público, environmental authorities, municipal offices, and federal agencies.

This is now the FOURTH formal escalation.

For years, this property has been subjected to illegal occupation, environmental abuse, blocked access, intimidation, physical aggression, and the improper disposal of human waste directly into the mangrove ecosystem.

For approximately 12 years, untreated human waste has been allowed to accumulate without legal drainage, sewage infrastructure, or environmental protection. Contamination flows directly into one of the most sensitive ecological zones in Playa del Carmen.

This is not management.

This is environmental destruction.

Rodrigo García Dueñas falsely represented himself as having legal authority over this land and used those false claims to lure businesses and individuals onto the property under fraudulent pretenses.

False authority.
False promises.
False legitimacy.

Bahia Divers was induced to move operations, equipment, and significant investment onto that land based on an eight-page contract that ultimately proved to be worthless because the legal authority behind it did not exist.

We believed it because we were shown what appeared to be legitimate existing businesses already operating there, including a kite surfing school that had supposedly been functioning from that location for more than seven years.

We were told:
“Look—they are here, they are operating, everything is legal, you will do great here too.”

That representation was false.

Those businesses were used as part of the deception to create false trust and induce financial commitment.

We were bamboozled.
We were lied to.
And substantial funds were paid—enough to finance major infrastructure improvements, including an entirely new solar panel and power system serving multiple units on the property.

Meanwhile, serious questions remain:

How are unlicensed, uninsured businesses allowed to continue operating inside a disputed ecological zone?

Where is PROFECO?

Where is enforcement?

If a tourist, resident, or visitor is injured there, who is responsible?

Who carries liability?

Who answers when there is no insurance, no legal permits, and no legitimate regulatory oversight?

This is not just fraud.

This is a public safety failure.

Since questioning this false legitimacy and refusing to participate in irregular activity, there has been:

• Loss of access to private property
• Financial damages
• Harassment and intimidation
• Physical aggression
• Violence against community members
• Elderly individuals being assaulted inside business spaces
• Ongoing retaliation against anyone who challenges this illegal control

This affects far more than one business.

Biologists, botanists, conservation workers, bee projects, community gardens, and environmental restoration efforts have all been pushed out.

Good people trying to protect this land have been threatened, intimidated, and forced away.

Meanwhile:

More illegal occupation continues.
More violence continues.
More contamination continues.
And now—fire.

Enough.

If someone claims to be “protecting” mangroves while allowing contamination, violence, illegal occupation, fraud, and fire risk to grow inside them, they are not protecting anything.

They are destroying it.

The community is watching.

The community is speaking.

And we will not be silent.

Do we wait until the mangroves are gone?

Do we wait until more people are assaulted?

Do we wait until someone dies?

Silence is what allowed this to continue.

This is not about revenge.

This is about responsibility.

This is about protecting one of the last remaining green lungs of this coastline before it is permanently destroyed.
