❓“Does my property insurance in Quebec cover me in Mexico?”

Let’s look at the two types of property insurance.
In this post, I’ll focus solely on home insurance. Car insurance will be covered in a future post.

🏠HOME INSURANCE – Yes.
Firstly, the third-party liability cover under your home insurance will apply wherever you are in the world. If you cause:
damage to someone else’s property
personal injury to someone else
The damage must be unintentional and accidental.

Example 1: You caused a fire in the villa you’re renting in Cancún because you left eggs on the hob.

Example 2: Whilst playing golf at the Tulum Country Club, you miss your shot and injure someone.

Example 3: Your dog on the beach suddenly bites someone else.

👔Next, home insurance protects the possessions you own, whether they are on your property or temporarily off it. This even applies when you’re travelling. So, this includes your clothes, jewellery, electronic devices and sports equipment.

Example: You lose your golf kit whilst travelling. Or, your latest model mobile phone is stolen.

Finally, anyone known to be living under the same roof as you or who is your dependent is covered by your home insurance.

Limits apply to claims made. So, it’s always best to check the details with your broker

🇲🇽 Is the Riviera Maya really safe?

We often hear about safety in Mexico in the media. However, the reality on the ground is often much more different than the headlines suggest.

The Riviera Maya — notably Tulum, Playa del Carmen and the Cancún area — welcomes millions of visitors every year, including families, retirees, entrepreneurs and investors from all over the world.

To say that the region as a whole is ‘dangerous’ would be just as simplistic as saying that New York or Miami are dangerous simply because certain areas experience crime.

As with any major tourist destination, you need to use your judgement: choose your neighbourhood wisely, avoid certain areas or situations, respect local rules and take the same precautions you would in any major city.
