Villarreal 1-1 Man Utd AET (11-10 pens): David de Gea misses crucial spot-kick as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side suffer Europa League final shootout defeat
Match report as Manchester United's four-year wait for a trophy goes on; Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side beaten 11-10 on penalties by Villarreal in Europa League final following 1-1 draw in Gdansk
David de Gea's missed penalty consigned Manchester United to a dramatic 11-10 penalty shootout defeat against Villarreal in the Europa League final following a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, Poland.
In front of 9,500 supporters, Gerard Moreno met Daniel Parejo's free-kick to steer home his 30th goal in all competitions to give the Spanish side a first-half lead (29).
United, who won the competition under Jose Mourinho in 2017, were indebted once again to the razor-sharp finishing of Edinson Cavani, who struck his 16th goal in his last 11 Europa League starts to haul his side level (55).
It was one of just two shots on target from United as extra time failed to illuminate a poor contest, but goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli would prove the hero during a pulsating shootout, first converting his own penalty before keeping out De Gea's effort as Unai Emery clinched a fourth Europa League title and Villarreal a first ever major trophy.

Fulham's relegation to the Championship was confirmed by an abject 2-0 defeat to Burnley, who guaranteed another season of Premier League football with a clinical victory at Craven Cottage.
Scott Parker's side needed four wins from their final four games to have any chance of avoiding the drop but were comprehensively beaten as their season-long stay in the top flight ended with three games to spare.
Fulham's fate was effectively sealed before half-time as Ashley Westwood's opener and Chris Wood's emphatic 50th Burnley goal left the hosts needing to score three unanswered goals - the same they had managed in their previous 11 outings.
Fortune favoured Fulham after the interval when goalkeeper Alphonse Ar**la avoided a straight red card for a clear handball outside the area, but the Cottagers were unable to take advantage of the reprieve, with Andre-Frank Anguissa cannoning the underside of the Burnley bar with the hosts' best effort of sparking a comeback.
Defeat - Fulham's 18th of an arduous campaign - sends them straight back to the Championship at the first attempt, while Burnley climb up to 14th with a victory which sees Sean Dyche deliver a sixth successive season of Premier League football.

UEFA are considering options regarding Istanbul's hosting of the Champions League final after Turkey was added to the UK's red list for travel just over three weeks before the showpiece fixture between Chelsea and Manchester City.
UK citizens returning from 'red list' countries are required to quarantine at a Government-approved hotel for 10 days.
The Government announced Turkey had joined the list of high-risk countries at a briefing on Friday evening.
Speaking at a press conference, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said fans should not travel and confirmed the Football Association has approached UEFA over whether the match could be moved to England.
Shapps said: "I'm afraid we are having to put Turkey on the red list. This will have a number of ramifications. First of all, it does mean with regards to the Champions League, fans should not travel to Turkey.
"The FA are in discussions with UEFA on this. We are very open to hosting the final but it is ultimately a decision for UEFA.
"Of course the UK has already got a successful track record of football matches with spectators, so we are well placed to do it.
"We are very open to it but it is in the end a decision for UEFA to make, but given there are two English clubs in that final. We look forward to what they have to say."
Manchester City and Chelsea booked their places in the final on May 29 after overcoming Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid respectively earlier this week.
Immediately talk turned to England hosting the final, with Turkey in a lockdown.
However, UEFA had insisted it had no plans to change the venue, stating: "The UEFA Champions League final will take place in Istanbul on May 29 with a limited number of spectators and we are assured the temporary lockdown which is in force until May 17 should not have any impact on the match.
"UEFA continues to work closely with the Turkish Football Federation and the local and national authorities to stage the match safely."
At Friday's press conference, Shapps said: "Red countries are those which should not be visited except in the most extreme of circumstances, where repeated testing and isolation in designated Government hotels on return is compulsory.
"Non-UK residents who have been in a red country in the last 10 days will still be barred from entering the UK.
"I must tell you that now due to concerns about Covid rates and variants of concern, Turkey, the Maldives, Nepal must regrettably be added to the red list."
Aston Villa approached the FA and UEFA earlier this week to offer Villa Park as the venue for the Champions League final and avoid the need for around 8,000 English fans to travel to Istanbul for the event.
Chelsea Supporters' Trust call for UK switch
The Chelsea Supporters' Trust added to the voices calling for the match to be switched to the UK.
The Chelsea fans group revealed plans for a meeting with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin this week, with the intention of urging the European boss to relocate the fixture.
"Turkey has been added to the red list and therefore no CFC supporters can travel to watch the UCL final," read a CST tweet.
"We are meeting with the UEFA president this week and will request that the fixture is moved to the UK."

Man City 2-0 PSG (Agg: 4-1): Pep Guardiola's side make history to reach first Champions League final
Match report as Man City eased past PSG to reach their first Champions League final; Riyad Mahrez's double secured a 2-0 win on the night; PSG frustration boiled over as Angel Di Maria was sent off for kick out on Fernandinho; City will face either Chelsea or Real Madrid in final on May 29
Manchester City reached the Champions League final for the first time in their history after Riyad Mahrez's double secured a 2-0 victory (4-1 on aggregate) over 10-man Paris Saint-Germain on a historic night at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola, who reaches the Champions League final for the first time since he won the competition with Barcelona in 2011, will now lead his side against either Chelsea or Real Madrid in the final in Istanbul on Saturday, May 29.
But before that, they have domestic matters to attend to and could add the Premier League title to the Carabao Cup they won last month with victory against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Trailing 2-1 from the first leg at the Parc des Princes last week, PSG, who could only name Kylian Mbappe on the substitute's bench, thought they had a chance to cut the deficit early on after referee Bjorn Kuipers pointed to the spot for a handball against Oleksandr Zinchenko. However, Kuipers overturned his original decision after replays showed the ball clearly hit the full-back's shoulder.
City took full advantage of the reprieve as Mahrez (11) found the back of the net from a tight angle to put them in an extremely dominant position at the break.
PSG committed plenty of bodies forward as they looked for a way back in the tie, but there was no way through City's rock-solid defence and the French side were eventually caught on the counter-attack as Mahrez (63) finished another fine City move to put the game beyond any doubt.
City's second goal sparked plenty of PSG frustration and they finished the game with 10 men after Angel Di Maria's kick out at Fernandinho in the 69th minute, ending any chance of a miraculous comeback as City eased to a historic victory.

Man City 2-0 PSG (Agg: 4-1): Pep Guardiola's side make history to reach first Champions League final
Report and free match highlights as Michail Antonio scores twice in eight minutes to seal a vital victory for West Ham in their hunt for European football; Chris Wood's penalty put Burnley ahead, scoring his seventh Premier League goal against West Ham
Michail Antonio's first-half double was enough for West Ham to see off Burnley 2-1 in an entertaining encounter, sending the Hammers into fifth.
Although West Ham saw good early openings, it was Burnley who went ahead in the 19th minute as Tomas Soucek fouled Chris Wood in the box. The striker fired home the penalty, continuing his trend of goals against West Ham (seven goals in eight Premier League games).
But two-and-a-half-minutes later, Europe-chasing West Ham were level when Antonio (21) headed home. The lively forward then added his second soon after (29) as he turned home a superb Said Benrahma cross.
Having registered 22 shots throughout the whole game, West Ham could have added more to their tally in the second half, although Burnley's Jay Rodriguez had the best chance to score but could only fire wide.
The victory sees West Ham go above Tottenham into fifth, keeping them on track for European football next season with four games to play. Burnley are now winless in their last eight Premier League home games - matching their longest run without a top-flight victory at Turf Moor (eight between December 1970 and March 1971) - and remain in 16th.

Roy Keane: Manchester United must target Harry Kane and Jack Grealish to mount Premier League title challenge
Roy Keane has called on Manchester United to spend "whatever it takes" to sign Harry Kane while Sky Sports pundit claims Jack Grealish is the "special player" needed to help turn his former club into Premier League champions
Roy Keane says Manchester United should target Harry Kane and Jack Grealish this summer if they are to mount a Premier League title challenge next season.
Manchester City require two more points to be confirmed as champions, with Pep Guardiola's side 13 points ahead of their neighbours having played an additional fixture following Sunday's postponement of United's match against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Keane was asked what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side need in order to compete with City next season, and the former United midfielder believes Kane and Grealish would significantly close the gap on their title rivals.
"I still feel they are two or three players away from challenging Man City," Keane told Sky Sports. "They're short. They still need a world-class striker, they need another midfielder and also possibly a centre-half. But I'd prioritise a striker and a midfielder.
"The two players who I've thought about over the last few weeks who I feel would be brilliant for Man Utd are Harry Kane up front - whatever it costs - and I'd go with Jack Grealish. I feel United are still short of that special player. I think Grealish would give them that and I feel he would enjoy playing at Old Trafford.
"The fans would love him. What I admire about Jack is he's got great courage on the football pitch. He always wants the ball in tight areas. We've seen over the last year or two his end product has improved. He's an excellent player and obviously Kane would guarantee goals.
"Would it be difficult to get these two players? You bet your life it would be, but Man Utd have to go out and try to sign the best otherwise we'll be having the same conversations next year about being nearly there. Jack would be ready for Man Utd. He's done well for Aston Villa, a brilliant club who are doing very well, but Jack's got to be selfish.

Preview: Real Madrid vs. Chelsea - prediction, team news, lineups
With the farcical fallout of the doomed European Super League still playing on their minds, Real Madrid and Chelsea gear up for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final showdown at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium on Tuesday night.
Los Blancos booked their spot in the final four courtesy of a 3-1 aggregate victory over Liverpool in the quarter-finals, while Chelsea survived a late scare against Porto to beat the Primeira Liga giants 2-1 over two legs.
The hosts go into this game on the back of a disappointing goalless stalemate with Real Betis in La Liga, whereas Chelsea boosted their top-four prospects with a 1-0 win at West Ham United.
In a turn of events that some have described as karma, European Super League clubs have not had it all their own way on the pitch recently. Arsenal lost in laughable fashion to Everton, Liverpool conceded a last-minute equaliser to Newcastle United, and Real Madrid missed the chance to go top of La Liga as they were held to a 0-0 draw against Real Betis on Saturday night.
As Florentino Perez – now football's public enemy number one – watched on, Real's attackers were nullified by Manuel Pellegrini's defence as the reigning champions missed the chance to return to the summit, with Altetico Madrid and Barcelona now able to capitalise when they return to action later on Sunday.
Despite being hit with the threat of expulsion from the Champions League due to their involvement in the widely-condemned European Super League - a project in which president Perez acted, and continues to act as the ringleader - Real's semi-final with Chelsea will go ahead as planned as they seek a 14th continental crown.
While Los Blancos could not assert their dominance over their opponents in the group stage, Atalanta and Liverpool have both fallen victim to the superiority of Zinedine Zidane's side in the knockout rounds, although the Frenchman had a combination of his defenders and wasteful Reds finishing to thank for a goalless draw at Anfield last time out.
Nevertheless, an inspirational first-leg performance from Vinicius Junior in the quarter-finals proved pivotal as Real Madrid consigned their miserable last-16 finishes of the past two seasons to history, and the last three times that Los Blancos have appeared in the final four, they have gone on to lift the trophy.
The visit of Chelsea deserves a Bernabeu at full capacity rather than a behind-closed-doors fixture at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, but Zidane's players have not allowed such inconveniences to distract them so far, so they should not allow the Super League debacle - however impactful it may be - to do so either.
While the goalless stalemate with Betis represented a third 0-0 in four games across all competitions for Real, they have strung together a 17-game unbeaten run across all competitions since losing 2-1 to Levante on January 30, and Zidane's rearguard now boasts four consecutive clean sheets.
Chelsea need no lessons in keeping attackers at bay, but during their 17-game unbeaten run, no team has managed to breach Real's defence more than once in a match, and they won five in a row on home soil before being forced to settle for a point against Betis.
Furthermore, Los Blancos have conceded just two goals in their last five Champions League matches and have won nine of their last 10 knockout ties in the tournament, but Chelsea are daring to dream under Thomas Tuchel and should not be short of confidence on the plane to Spain.
Tuchel's flabbergasted reaction to Timo Werner's second-half miss against West Ham somewhat epitomised the striker's time at Chelsea so far, but thankfully for the former RB Leipzig man, he had already ended his goal drought with a decisive first-half strike at the London Stadium.
Werner had failed to score in any of his last seven Premier League fixtures before Saturday's London derby, but he was on hand to meet Ben Chilwell's cross and calmly slot home to propel Chelsea to a 1-0 win, and crucially, a vital three points in the race for a top-four finish.
However, the game was overshadowed by yet another controversial VAR decision - a weekly occurrence in the Premier League nowadays - as Fabian Balbuena caught Chilwell after clearing the ball and was comically given a red card by referee Chris Kavanagh, and David Moyes made his feelings very clear after the full-time whistle.
West Ham's loss is Chelsea's gain, though, as the Blues established a three-point lead over their capital counterparts in the top four of the table, while Joe Willock's equaliser in the dying embers against close challengers Liverpool also saw the Stamford Bridge faithful sing an Arsenal player's praises at the weekend - a very rare sight indeed.
Tuchel also has an FA Cup final to prepare for, but winning the biggest prize of them all in his first half-season at Stamford Bridge would not just add another trophy to the glistening cabinet, it would also go a long way to ensuring his stay in one of the most unforgiving jobs in the game.
While Real Madrid have enjoyed a spate of clean sheets recently, Chelsea have also recorded three shut-outs in a row before their journey to the Spanish capital, and they have only conceded a trio of goals in the 2020-21 Champions League so far.
Two 'home' defeats have been the only blots on Tuchel's notebook so far, as the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss has navigated his first 10 away games at Chelsea unbeaten - becoming the first manager in the club's history to do so - and the Blues have ended up on the winning side on eight of those occasions.
Having already ended their last-16 hoodoo of the past few seasons, Chelsea are appearing in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2014 - when they were dumped out by Atletico Madrid - and the most recent time before that was their triumphant run in the 2011-12 edition.
This game would normally be classed as a blockbuster tie for the neutrals, but given the calamitous off-the-pitch events that have overshadowed the footballing world this week, those who do not support a member of the 'Dirty Dozen' may struggle to pick a preferred winner as the sides battle to meet Manchester City or PSG on May 29.

European Super League: Chelsea, Man City, Real Madrid could be banned from Champions League finals - Danish FA
Man City, Chelsea, and Real Madrid could be banned from playing in Champions League semi-finals after signing up for European Super League leaving only PSG; Arsenal and Man Utd remain in Europa League; UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says unclear if the clubs can stay in the competitions
Breakaway Super League clubs Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea could be banned from this season's Champions League semi-finals, UEFA executive committee member Jesper Moller said.
The trio are part of the 12 clubs who announced on Sunday they were setting up a breakaway European Super League, a move which has drawn widespread criticism.
Real Madrid are due to face Chelsea and Manchester City are drawn against Paris Saint-Germain - who have not agreed to join the breakaway league.
Arsenal and Manchester United, who have also signed up to the plans, remain in the Europa League.
In an interview with Danish broadcaster DR, Moller, who is head of the Danish FA, said: "There is an extraordinary executive meeting on Friday where I expect the 12 clubs to be thrown out.
"I think that we, who love football, have had it. Someone has to draw the line and find out which way the clubs should go. We owe it to our fans and everyone who loves football.
"The clubs should be thrown out and I expect it to happen on Friday. Then we will see how the Champions League will finish.
"I don't think they can do it to the fans and to everyone who loves football.
"During the weekend, some people negotiated with the other side, which is not fair to the president of UEFA and those who have spent time on the Champions League model in the past years. They can't do that.
"There have to be some consequences, and, this time, I think there will be."
Regarding whether players will still be able to play for their national teams, if they play in the Super League, Moller said: "If you don't want to be a part of the European sports model, I can't see why you should be part of the national team.
"In my opinion, the contracts could be annulled when the clubs drop out of UEFA competitions. Then, the players are released and can choose to play for a club that displays solidarity and is part of the community - our pyramid system."
Moller's comments came shortly after UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin confirmed the governing body would be seeking player bans for this summer's European Championships.
When asked if the proposals would stop any players from competing in Euro 2020, Ceferin said: "We're still assessing the situation with our legal team. It's a bit too early.
"We will take all the sanctions that we can and we will inform you as soon as we have a clear answer. My opinion is that, as soon as possible, the players have to be banned from all our competitions."
Ceferin has said it is still unclear whether the proposed breakaway clubs will be involved in the remainder of this season's Champions League and Europa League competition.
UEFA's president says a legal assessment is ongoing and further talks will be held on Tuesday after the UEFA Congress.
