Teaching students about financial empowerment 10/09/2019

U4U and PINTAR Foundation had the privilege of working with 6 schools from the Kuching and Kota Samarahan districts last month, where we engaged up to 150 form 4 students in a financial empowerment and social innovation workshop conducted by Grow the Goose that culminated into a competition. Thanks to HSBC Bank Malaysia for believing in us and for believing in the kids.

Teaching students about financial empowerment KUCHING: Some 150 Form Four students from six schools in Kuching district took part in a financial empowerment programme aimed at enhancing their understanding of finances and socially-conscious entrepreneurship.

Charting a new path through "Clothes of Confidence: Money & Me" - Financial Empowerment program curated as a learning and growing opportunity.

19 Aug - 5 Sept 2019 | Islamic Information Centre Kuching, Sarawak

150 underprivileged form four students from a total of six schools from the Kuching district; completed financial empowerment and social entrepreneurship workshop, held across two weeks; aimed at enhancing the understanding of financial knowledge and socially-conscious entrepreneurship among the youth of Sarawak.

Organised from 19-28 August, the workshop was specifically targeted at Form 4 students from the B40 income level families, for them to get a grasp of basic money management skills as they plan for their next steps and move into adult life in the next two years.

This instalment of CoC also engaged two teachers from each of the six schools to undergo a Train the Trainer (TtT) program on Financial Empowerment and Social Entrepreneurship. The objective of TtT is to empower the schools to continue sharing the program module with more students after the completion of the program.

“HSBC has long supported education across the globe, especially helping disadvantaged young people access primary, secondary and higher education. We are now focusing our efforts on helping people develop the employability and financial skills they need to thrive in the competitive world. We believe that the skills and knowledge to manage financial resources effectively are fundamental to improving life chances and achieving economic well-being in a young person’s future. Through this project “Clothes of Confidence: Money and Me”, we hope the 150 students will be equipped to manage money effectively and will be motivated to build assets, such as savings and a home or business, to increase financial stability. Apart from that, we anticipate the students will be inspired to become entrepreneurs by leveraging on their heightened financial skills and further build a sustainable future to support themselves, the communities and social causes”.

Something's brewing. We had the opportunity to meet with En. Mohd Erfino Johari, Chief Corporate Officer of Malaysia's leading school uniform manufacturer, Canggih Malaysia. Did you know that Canggih has a 100% Malaysian workforce? And that they provide free sewing lessons to underprivileged communities in Kelantan without expecting anything in return? Those who have undergone training with them can also opt to work for them. We are truly inspired and look forward to future collaborations.
