MEGALANES SARAWAK PROPOSED AS TENPIN BOWLING VENUE FOR 2029 ISLAMIC SOLIDARITY GAMES
KUCHING: Megalanes Sarawak welcomed a delegation from the Islamic Solidarity Sports Association (ISSA) for a venue inspection on Thursday evening, as Sarawak presented a proposal for tenpin bowling to be considered for inclusion in the 2029 Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG).
The delegation was led by ISSA Secretary-General Nasser Majali, who visited the 42-lane Megalanes Sarawak at Emart Batu Kawa to assess the venue, its facilities and its capability to host an international-level tenpin bowling competition.
During the visit, Nasser was hosted by Mr Sunny Si Poh Heng, President of the Amateur Bowling (Tenpin) Association of Sarawak (ABAS), together with YB Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak.
The venue inspection provided an opportunity for ABAS to showcase Megalanes Sarawak’s competition facilities, technical capabilities and experience in hosting major bowling championships.
More importantly, the visit formed part of Sarawak’s effort to put forward tenpin bowling as a proposed sport for the 2029 Islamic Solidarity Games, with Megalanes Sarawak proposed as the competition venue should the sport be included in the Games programme.
With 42 lanes, Megalanes Sarawak has established itself as one of Malaysia’s major tenpin bowling venues and has hosted numerous state, national and international competitions.
Its existing competition infrastructure, tournament operations experience and technical capabilities were among the key strengths highlighted during the inspection, demonstrating the venue’s readiness to accommodate a major international bowling championship.
The Islamic Solidarity Games are organised by ISSA and bring together athletes from member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The Games are staged every four years, with the most recent edition held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2025.
Malaysia has been selected to host the next edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games in 2029.
For Sarawak’s bowling fraternity, the proposal presents an opportunity not only to introduce tenpin bowling to the ISG sporting programme, but also to bring another major international sporting event to Sarawak.
Should tenpin bowling receive the necessary approval for inclusion, Megalanes Sarawak’s established facilities and experience in delivering major championships could position the venue as a strong candidate to host the competition.
The visit concluded positively, with the delegation given a closer look at the venue and its capabilities as Sarawak continues to advocate for tenpin bowling to be part of the 2029 Islamic Solidarity Games and for the competition to be staged at Megalanes Sarawak.
