NAMIBIA AND ANGOLA STRENGTHEN COOPERATION IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

The Municipality of Humpata, in Angola’s Huíla Province, on Tuesday, 21 January 2026, hosted an official visit by a delegation comprising four provincial governors from the Republic of Namibia. The purpose of the visit was to gain first-hand insight into the seed improvement process developed by the company Jardins da Yoba, implemented in the municipalities of Chibia and Humpata.

During the visit, the Namibian delegation toured the facilities of Jardins da Yoba, where they received detailed technical briefings on seed production, selection, and improvement methods. These processes are regarded as strategic for increasing agricultural productivity and strengthening food security in southern Angola.

As part of the programme, the visitors also toured the Tchivinguiro Agricultural Institute, where they were briefed on the institution’s operations, mission, and its historically significant role in the technical and professional training of personnel in the agricultural sector. The visit included a guided tour of the institute’s crop fields and livestock production areas.

The governors and other members of the delegation expressed high satisfaction with the level of organisation and the quality of training provided, describing the Tchivinguiro Agricultural Institute as one of Angola’s oldest and most prestigious technical and vocational education institutions. On the occasion, openness was expressed towards strengthening bilateral cooperation, both in the exchange of practical experience and in the field of teaching and learning systems.

The representative of the University of Namibia, who was part of the delegation, indicated the possibility for final-year students of the Tchivinguiro Agricultural Institute to pursue higher education in Namibia, as well as for Namibian students to benefit from technical training in the various specialisations offered by the Angolan institution.

The visit was accompanied by the Municipal Administrator of Humpata, Rita Miranda, who joined the delegation throughout the programme, including a brief stop at the Leba Lookout, one of the region’s main tourist attractions.

At the end of the activities, the Municipal Administrator, speaking to NBC—the Namibian public broadcaster responsible for covering the event—thanked the delegation for choosing the Municipality of Humpata for this important exchange of experiences. She reaffirmed the Municipal Administration’s full willingness to provide all necessary institutional support and highlighted the existing partnership between the Humpata Municipal Administration and Jardins da Yoba, underlining the positive impact of the seed improvement project on promoting the municipality’s institutional image and economic development.

ONAMBUTU – Ohangwena Region Governor, Hon. Kadiva Hamutumwa, has called on Namibians to stand united in grief as the nation mourns the death of Swapo Party stalwart and veteran of the liberation struggle, Matias Kanana Hishono.
Hishono passed away on 14 January 2026, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in the country’s fight for freedom and nation-building.
Governor Hamutumwa made the call on Saturday when she accompanied the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Frans Kapofi, to Hishono’s home village of Onambutu in the Ohangwena Region, where a book of condolences was officially opened for mourners to pay their respects.
Describing the late Hishono as a towering figure in Namibia’s history, Hamutumwa said he was a pillar of strength whose life and service inspired generations of Namibians.
“We must unite as a region and as a nation during this difficult time. Comrade Hishono’s contribution to our liberation and the values he stood for should continue to guide us,” she said.
The Governor urged Namibians to draw inspiration from Hishono’s life of sacrifice, resilience and commitment to the country’s freedom and development.
Minister Kapofi echoed the Governor’s sentiments, highlighting that Hishono made a remarkable contribution not only during the liberation struggle but also in the period after independence.
“Comrade Hishono played a meaningful role in the fight for Namibia’s independence and continued to serve the nation with dedication after freedom was attained,” Kapofi said.

Community members, leaders and fellow veterans have continued to visit the Hishono homestead to offer condolences and reflect on the life of a man remembered for his unwavering commitment to the liberation of Namibia and the unity of its people.
