Every year after the Desert Dash I watch the same thing happen. Riders who trained hard for months stop riding.
Some had the race of their life. Some did not finish. What they had in common was that the second weekend in December was the last event written on their calendar.
When another goal already exists beyond the finish line, race day becomes a waypoint in a longer season. The time to set it is now, while you are still planning the run-in.
Pick your race. Then pick what comes after it:

Where do you start when you want to train with structure? You count backwards from your goal race.
As an example: with the Nedbank Desert Dash on 11 December, counted backwards, the plan starts in mid August. Around 18 weeks of base, build and peak, in the right order. The same structure works for any goal race.
Pick the race, count backwards, place the blocks. Full breakdown on the blog:

Which indoor cycling platform is right for you?
Zwift, FulGaz or TrainingPeaks Virtual. All three integrate with TrainingPeaks, so the choice comes down to which one you enjoy most. Here is how I compare them, and why I ride mainly on FulGaz.

The riders I coach who get faster on 10 hours a week all do one thing differently.
They stop trying to train like someone who has 20.
If you are juggling a job, a family, and the goal of racing well, you already know the 5am starts and the midweek rides that disappear when work runs late. The fix is rarely more hours. It is what you do with the ten you have.
That is exactly what I built The 10-Hour Athlete around. A free playbook for competitive amateur cyclists who need every session to count.
Inside:→ Why “harder” is quietly making you slower (the Zone 3 trap)→ The polarised approach time-crunched riders actually need→ A sample 10-hour week you can fit around real life→ How to train with your family, not around them
No fluff, no upsell. Just structure that respects your time.

End of April I completed my 14-month Mindset Practitioner training. I’m working towards Certified Mindset Coach.
A few days ago, in the Fireside chat with Drikus, we spoke a lot about Mindset. The wind. The dark moments. The thinking that built his comeback.
I’d like to help more of you build mental fitness. So I’m starting a Mindset Q&A session.
Monday 18 May, 18:00 CAT. Open call on Zoom. 45 minutes. Free.
I’ll kick off with a few thoughts on goal setting. Then we’ll jump into your questions. Let’s learn from each other.
DM me for the Zoom link.

Congrats again on your performance on Saturday, . Well deserved celebrations.
Train hard, ride hard, enjoy the moments. We too often downplay our achievements and forget the celebrations.

The wind, the mud, 17-hour days - rode straight through it all and took Race Across South Africa.
But the story isn’t the win.
It’s everything before: Badlands DNF with COVID. Rwanda crash with a fractured hand. Months of indoor training with a splint, finding reasons to ride when he didn’t feel like it.
“You need to build character in the dark moments to inspire others when you shine.”
The full conversation with his coach - setbacks, mindset, and the comeback - is now available.
