When Passion Became the Sponsor: Ogun State Handball Athletes Unite to Celebrate Unity, Family, and the Game

As the year gently bowed out, the Ogun State Handball Court witnessed a moment that statistics could never capture and trophies could never replace.
There was no big sponsor banner, no blaring sirens of competition officials—just heart, unity, and love for the game.
The Ogun State handball athletes, refusing to let the year end quietly, decided to write their own finale. They pooled their personal resources—contributions from training allowances, savings from faraway cities, and sacrifices made in silence—to organize an end-of-the-year friendly game that felt more like a family reunion than a sporting event.
Players arrived from different places: indigenes who had never left home, and diaspora athletes who returned with stories, experience, and the same undying passion for Ogun colours. Male and female athletes stood side by side, lacing boots, exchanging laughter, and warming up not as rivals, but as one united team.
As the ball was thrown into play, the pavilion came alive. Cheers didn’t come only from teammates, but from wives, husbands, parents, siblings, and children who filled the stands with pride. Every goal was celebrated twice—once on the court, and again in the stands. Every save drew applause that echoed like gratitude for a year survived together.
Children waved and screamed their parents’ names. Old teammates embraced after tough tackles. Smiles replaced pressure. Sweat mixed with joy.
It wasn’t about winning. It wasn’t about medals. It was about belonging.
In that moment, Ogun State handball proved something powerful: that sport is more than competition—it is community. That unity does not wait for funding. That passion can organize itself. And that when athletes believe in one another, they create memories stronger than any scoreboard result.
As the sun set and the final whistle blew, there were no losers on the court—only champions of togetherness.
That day, Ogun State handball didn’t just end the year. They celebrated family, sacrifice, and the unbreakable spirit of the game.

“Hearts on the Field”

By Bola Giwa

They rise before dawn,
when the world is still dreaming,
chasing whispers of greatness
only the brave can hear.

With every stride, every lift, every leap,
they stitch courage into motion—
turning sweat into stories,
and setbacks into songs of strength.

Their bodies bend but never break,
their spirits stretch beyond limits,
for champions are not born of ease
but of the storms they choose to face.

On dusty tracks and crowded courts,
in silent gyms and roaring arenas,
they carry nations on their shoulders
and hope in the grip of their palms.

They fall—yes—but they rise stronger,
for defeat is but a teacher,
and victory a language
spoken only by the persistent.

Oh, athletes of fire,
your journey is a beacon:
showing the world that discipline is art,
purpose is power,
and courage is a muscle
trained in the hidden hours.

So play on—
for every heartbeat is a drum of destiny,
every moment a chance to rewrite history,
and every step a reminder
that true glory lives not in medals,
but in the fearless who dare to chase them
