Water competency refers to having the fundamental swimming and water safety skills needed to anticipate, avoid, and survive common drowning situations.

It goes beyond basic swimming and includes safety knowledge, skill in swimming for a period, self-rescue, risk assessment, and the ability to help others.

Key skills include safely entering the water, treading or floating for at least one minute, swimming 25 - 50 meters, and orienting oneself to find a way out of the water. 👀
