Lionel Messi once again proved his mastery on the world stage, curling home a trademark free-kick to hand Inter Miami a 2-1 victory over FC Porto in a pulsating FIFA Club World Cup Group A showdown.

Playing under the bright lights of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Argentine wizard delivered the moment of magic in the 54th minute, netting the 68th free-kick goal of his glittering career. The goal not only sealed the win but also marked the first-ever Club World Cup victory for a Major League Soccer (MLS) side in the tournament’s expanded format.

âš˝ How It Happened:
The match started with drama as Porto’s Samu Aghehowa converted a controversial penalty in the 8th minute, following a VAR-confirmed foul by Inter Miami’s Noah Allen.

Miami hit back almost immediately after halftime. Telasco Segovia slotted in the equaliser in the 47th minute from a Marcelo Weigandt cross.

Then came the Messi moment. Brought down just outside the penalty arc, the crowd erupted with chants of "Messi! Messi!" as he stepped up and curled the ball over the wall into the top corner — a strike that left Porto goalkeeper Claudio Ramos rooted to the spot.

🏆 Group Stakes and What’s Next
With the win, Inter Miami sits top of Group A and now need a win over Palmeiras at Hard Rock Stadium to advance to the Round of 16

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a game-changing financial initiative titled CAF Impact, designed to fortify the operational and developmental capacity of its Member Associations (MAs) — including the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Launched during CAF’s Executive Committee meeting on April 26, the new scheme will see each member federation receive up to $1.6 million, marking a substantial 60% increase compared to the previous cycle of development funding.

In addition to the base grants, federations that meet specified targets will be eligible for performance-based bonuses of up to $500,000, making the total possible allocation over $2 million per association.

CAF Secretary General Véron Mosengo-Omba stated that the program aims to deepen financial transparency, improve results-based investments, and enforce rigorous compliance across all affiliated bodies.

“CAF and its President are committed to ensuring that every dollar invested contributes directly to the growth of African football,” Mosengo-Omba emphasized.
“With CAF Impact, we are building systems that reward progress and protect integrity.

With the countdown to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in full swing, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are preparing to storm Morocco in search of a record-extending 10th continental title — and this time, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is going all out with a bold fan campaign tagged Mission X.

The nine-time African champions will depart Portugal for Casablanca on June 25, following a brief camp and a friendly match against Portugal on June 23. Upon arrival in Morocco, the team will embark on a 10-day training block designed to fine-tune strategies, solidify cohesion, and build the momentum needed for a title-winning run.

Speaking from the United States, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi said the Mission X campaign is about galvanizing support from every corner of Nigeria and the diaspora:

“We are committed to fully supporting the Super Falcons’ campaign for a 10th continental title,” Sanusi declared.
“That is why we’re launching Mission X — to sensitise football-loving Nigerians at home and abroad, young and old, to rally behind the team.

The FIFA Council: WHY IT MATTERS
The FIFA Council is FIFA’s highest decision-making body between Congress meetings.
It consists of 37 members, including six from Africa.
Its responsibilities include:
✅ Setting FIFA’s policies and strategy
âś… Overseeing global football development
âś… Making key financial and governance decisions

Pinnick was only the third Nigerian ever to hold a FIFA Council seat, following in the footsteps of Oyo Orok Oyo and Amos Adamu.
His loss means Nigeria must wait until the next election cycle to push for a return to FIFA’s elite table.
