“They made an inquiry for Rayan Aït-Nouri at Manchester City. It was an opportunity that was presented to them by intermediaries, and they then went and checked it out with City.

"It would have been a loan, I think, with an option that City wanted — an option or obligation, I can’t quite remember.

"Manchester United weren’t interested in that because he’s NOT their long-term target for that position, which suggests there IS a long-term target.

"So, let’s get tongues wagging on who might be Manchester United’s next left-back signing.

"It shows they were looking at that area of the pitch. We also know they had an interest in Lewis Hall previously, but he was never going to leave Newcastle this summer. The club never wanted him to go, so they weren’t willing to sanction it after all their other departures.

"Whether he wanted to leave, I’m not quite sure.

"Myles Lewis-Skelly was a player they explored too.

"Ultimately, Manchester United are not going to do something, they say, just for the sake of it. They’re trying to act in a more disciplined, prudent and responsible way, which some would say is a departure from certain times in the past.

"They will feel that with Luke Shaw, Dorgu, Harry Amass and the ability of Mazraoui to cover on that side as well, they’re okay.”
