PREMIER LEAGUE MATCHWEEK 3: BIG CLASHES, LONDON DERBY AND TEAMS SEEKING MOMENTUM
The 2026/27 Premier League season enters Matchweek 3 with another exciting round of fixtures, as clubs look to build momentum, recover from disappointing results and maintain their strong starts.
The action actually begins on Friday, September 4, when Ipswich Town host Liverpool, before eight more matches are played on Saturday and Sunday. The standout fixture is Sunday's London derby between defending champions Arsenal and Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
Ipswich Town vs Liverpool
Ipswich started the season with a 1-0 victory over Sunderland but suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat to Manchester United in their second game.
Liverpool, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Newcastle on the opening weekend before another 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool will therefore be desperate for their first league win of the campaign, while Ipswich will hope to bounce back at home.
Newcastle United vs Bournemouth
Newcastle come into this game with confidence after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in their previous fixture.
Bournemouth, however, were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton. Newcastle will look to continue their positive start, while Bournemouth will be aiming to turn draws into victories.
Brentford vs Sunderland
Brentford were held to a 1-1 draw away to Leeds United last time out. Sunderland recorded their first Premier League victory of the campaign with a 1-0 win over Fulham. This encounter could be another difficult test for Brentford against a Sunderland side showing early signs of resilience.
Brighton vs Leeds United
Brighton suffered a thrilling 4-3 defeat against Chelsea, despite competing strongly in an entertaining encounter. Leeds, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Brentford. Brighton will want to recover immediately, while Leeds will be looking to secure their first win of the season.
Fulham vs Crystal Palace
Fulham suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in their previous match, while Crystal Palace were beaten 4-1 by Manchester City.
Both sides therefore enter the fixture searching for a response. With neither team wanting to fall further behind early in the campaign, this could be a tense encounter.
Manchester City vs Coventry City
Manchester City arrive with maximum confidence after a convincing 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace, with Erling Haaland scoring twice.
Coventry, meanwhile, lost 1-0 to Hull City. City will be overwhelming favourites on paper, but Coventry will hope to produce a major upset against the defending Premier League giants.
Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham Hotspur
Nottingham Forest secured an important 2-2 draw away to Liverpool in their last fixture, while Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United.
Forest will therefore approach the game with greater confidence, while Spurs need a strong response to avoid an early-season setback.
Hull City vs Aston Villa
Hull City have been one of the surprise packages of the opening weeks, winning their first two matches, including a 1-0 victory over Coventry.
Aston Villa, on the other hand, lost 1-0 at home to defending champions Arsenal. Hull will be looking to continue their perfect start, while Villa need points to kick-start their campaign.
Everton vs Manchester United
Everton played out a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth in their previous game. Manchester United, meanwhile, produced one of the biggest results of Matchweek 2, beating Ipswich Town 5-2 with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick.
United will enter this fixture with confidence, but Everton will hope home advantage can help them frustrate Ruben Amorim's side.
Arsenal vs Chelsea – London Derby
The biggest fixture of the weekend comes at the Emirates as champions Arsenal welcome Chelsea. Arsenal defeated Aston Villa 1-0 in their previous fixture to maintain their perfect start, while Chelsea followed their 3-2 victory over Fulham with an impressive 4-3 win against Brighton. Both teams have six points, making this an early test between two unbeaten sides.
The Arsenal-Chelsea clash promises to be a tactical battle between the reigning champions and an ambitious Chelsea side under Xabi Alonso.
Arsenal will rely on their defensive organisation and home advantage, while Chelsea's attacking firepower could make this one of the most entertaining matches of the weekend.
MATCHWEEK 3 VERDICT
With several teams already showing contrasting fortunes, Matchweek 3 could provide the first major indication of which clubs are genuine early contenders and which teams still need to find their rhythm.
