A student of Rivers State University (RSU) has been detained after a video showing him in a heated confrontation with a lecturer, identified as Prof. Benjamin Senibo Pepple, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, went viral online. The footage also showed the student being held in a campus security cell following the incident.

An eyewitness has narrated what allegedly led to the altercation. According to the account, some first-year Computer Engineering students were in their classroom on Tuesday when a senior student entered to briefly share a Christian message and offer words of encouragement, a practice described as common among campus fellowships.

The eyewitness claims that Prof. Pepple walked into the classroom during the session and allegedly confronted the senior student, accusing him of misconduct. The lecturer reportedly slapped him multiple times, dragged his shirt, and called in the Chief Security Officer (CSO). The student was then arrested and detained by campus security throughout the day.

The witnessing student alleged that the detained student is the president of a Christian fellowship on campus and raised concerns over what they described as repeated harassment of Christian leaders by the lecturer. They called on concerned authorities and rights groups to intervene and petition the lecturer, adding that the detained student is now in poor health following the incident.

As of the time of reporting, the university has not issued an official statement regarding the confrontation or the student's detention.

“Investing in education is investing in our collective tomorrow,” Dr. Moses Paul

The Chairmanship Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Dr. Moses Paul, PhD (Dr. Mo), has reiterated the importance of investing in education as a foundation for national development. He made this known on Monday during the commissioning of a newly established laboratory at LEKCED International School, Jikwoyi, Abuja.

Dr. Paul, who accompanied former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, praised the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening the educational capacity of schools within the council. He noted that each engagement with Mr. Obi reinforces the belief that purposeful leadership is measured by its direct impact on people and communities.

At the event, Mr. Obi restated his long-standing message that national productivity and security are tied to the education and empowerment of young people. He emphasized that no child should be deprived of quality learning opportunities because of their location, stressing that children in Jikwoyi and across Nigeria deserve access to globally competitive education.

As part of his support to the institution, Mr. Obi announced a donation of ₦2 million to facilitate the purchase of chemicals, reagents, and essential laboratory materials. He also pledged to provide an internet-enabled projector to enhance digital learning within the school.

Dr. Paul described the gesture as an example of the deliberate and community-focused investments needed to uplift young learners and strengthen educational systems. He added that such interventions align with global best practices and reflect a commitment to preparing Nigerian youths for future opportunities.

“Investing in education is investing in our collective tomorrow,” Dr. Paul stated, expressing optimism that with sustained commitment, a better AMAC and a better Nigeria are within reach.
