Enugu Airport Concession β What It Means for the South East.
WHAT DOES THE AERO ALLIANCE CONCESSION MEAN FOR NDIGBO?
On January 22, 2026, the FG officially handed over Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu to Aero Alliance under a PPP concession.
Ownership stays with the Federal Government. It was not sold.
What Enugu / South East people are supposed to get:
1. A working international gateway again β better domestic and international connectivity for trade, tourism and travel
2. Runway rehabilitation + terminal expansion β to full ICAO/IATA standards, with new baggage systems, navigation tech, firefighting and lighting
3. Better passenger experience β upgraded VIP lounges, retail spaces, car parks
4. Jobs β existing FAAN staff transfer with full benefits, no retrenchment, plus new airport-area jobs in cargo/logistics/retail
5. Cargo boost β Aero Alliance will run ground handling and cargo directly, big win for South East exporters and traders
6. Oversight β quarterly financial reporting, government approval still required for landing fees / passenger charges
Note: press reports differ on the concession length, 20, 30 and 80 years have all been quoted. Two operational items, security charges and the financial model, were still being finalized at signing.
If they deliver on the mandatory upgrades, this is a major win for the South East. If they don't, the contract has termination clauses.
