π° BREAKING NEWS: Senate Approves Limited Electronic Transmission of Election Results
Nigeriaβs Senate has approved amendments to the Electoral Act allowing presiding officers to transmit polling unit results electronically to INECβs IReV portal after signing the manual Form EC8A.
According to the amendment passed during an emergency session, the manual result form will take precedence if network failure occurs.
Senate spokesperson, Ajibola Basiru,
described the decision as a unanimous move aimed at strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
However, the decision has sparked mixed reactions nationwide. Civil rights activist Dele Farotimi and other stakeholders have criticized the amendment, calling it a potential loophole. Several former ministers and political observers are now demanding mandatory real-time electronic uploads ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As protests continue across parts of the country, the bill now awaits approval from the House of Representatives.

π₯ BREAKING: Nigerians Demand Transparent Elections at National Assembly
Nigerians today stormed the National Assembly in Abuja under the banner , demanding the restoration of real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The protest comes after the Senate amended the Electoral Act, removing the mandatory requirement for real-time result transmission. Lawmakers, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, defended the change, saying it gives INEC flexibility due to poor network coverage in some areas.
However, critics and activists, including Aisha Yesufu and Omoyele Sowore, have strongly opposed the move, warning it could open the door to election rigging. Civil society groups and Peter Obi have also vowed to continue pushing for reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Senate has now scheduled an emergency session on Tuesday as public pressure continues to mount.

π¨ Election Transparency Debate Sparks Reactions Ahead of 2027
Nigerian lawmakers have rejected a proposal that would require presiding officers to upload polling unit results electronically in real time to the IReV portal. Instead, they chose to maintain the 2022 system, which allows manual signing, stamping, and result transfer based on guidelines set by the electoral commission.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that electronic transmission remains part of the process, similar to the 2022 elections.
However, some senators, including Enyinnaya Abaribe, disagreed with the decision, accusing the Senate leadership of altering proceedings and calling for clearer laws supporting electronic result transmission.
The decision has also drawn criticism from political figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, who described it as a setback that could reduce transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has triggered strong reactions online, with hashtags like trending, although public protests have remained minimal so far.
The bill will now move to a joint conference committee with the House of Representatives for final harmonization before it is sent for presidential approval.
π What are your thoughts on this development? Do you think electronic transmission of results should be mandatory?
