📢 PUBLIC AWARENESS FOR FARMERS

Wheat Offal: Why It Works Well for Cattle But Fails in Poultry

By Royal Veterinary Consult

Many farmers use wheat offal (bran) for feeding animals, but the truth is this:

👉 Wheat offal is good for ruminants like cattle, goats, and sheep.
👉 Wheat offal is NOT good as a main feed for poultry.

Below is what every farmer should know:

🐓 1. Poultry + Wheat Offal = Poor Performance

Chickens cannot digest high fiber.
Wheat offal contains too much fiber and very low energy.

If you feed chickens with wheat offal alone, you will notice:

Severe weight loss

No fat in the carcass

Dry meat

Slow growth

Weak birds

Poor egg production

Poultry need high-energy ingredients like maize, soya, groundnut cake, etc. Wheat offal should only be used in very small quantity.

🐄 2. Cattle, Goats & Sheep Love Wheat Offal

Ruminants have microbes in the rumen that digest fiber easily.

When you give them wheat offal (especially mixed with water), it:

Improves appetite

Supports digestion

Provides fermentable energy

Increases milk production

Helps maintain body condition

Many dairy farms use wheat offal because cows respond very well to it.

3️⃣ Why the Difference?

The digestive systems are not the same.

Animal Digestive System Reaction to Wheat Offal

Poultry Simple stomach Cannot digest fiber → weight loss
Cattle/Goats/Sheep Ruminants Fiber is fermented → more milk & better condition

📌 Final Advice

Do NOT feed chickens with wheat offal alone.

Use wheat offal freely in ruminant feeding.

For best results, always combine ingredients properly.

🔥 Key Benefits of Molasses in Livestock Nutrition

1. Excellent Source of Energy

Molasses is rich in carbohydrates.
It helps animals maintain body condition, especially during:

Dry season feed shortage

Stress periods

Recovery from illness

2. Improves Feed Palatability

Animals naturally love the sweet taste.
Molasses encourages them to eat more—very useful when feeding:

Low-quality roughages

Concentrates

Mineral mixes

3. Supports Digestion

Molasses enhances rumen microbial activity in ruminants.
This leads to:

Better fibre digestion

Improved nutrient use

Reduced risk of digestive disturbances

4. Supplies Essential Minerals

Molasses contains:

Calcium

Potassium

Iron

Trace minerals

These help boost immunity and metabolic functions.

5. Reduces Dust in Feeds

When used to mix feed, it binds particles together, reducing:

Dust

Feed wastage

Respiratory irritation, especially in poultry

6. Boosts Appetite in Sick or Weak Animals

Animals recovering from disease eat more when feed is mixed with molasses.

7. Helps in Weight Gain & Finishing

Especially useful for:

Goats and sheep for meat

Cattle in fattening programs

Pigs to improve growth rate

💡 How to Use Molasses Safely

Ruminants (Cattle/Goats/Sheep)

Mix 5–10% molasses in feed

Or dilute with water and spray on hay

Molasses blocks can also be offered free-choice

Pigs

Add 3–5% in feed rations

Poultry

Mix only very small quantities (1–2%) in feed

Acts as a binder to reduce dust

⚠️ Precautions

Do NOT overfeed; too much can cause diarrhea.

Ensure clean water is always available.

Avoid giving undiluted molasses to young animals.

🐔 TODAY’S POULTRY AWARENESS: CAUSES OF SUDDEN MORTALITY IN CHICKENS & HOW TO PREVENT IT

Sudden death in poultry is one of the biggest challenges farmers face — but most of the causes can be prevented with proper management.
Here are the top causes every farmer should know:

❗1. Poor Brooding Temperature

If the brooder is too cold → chicks pile and suffocate.
If it’s too hot → dehydration and sudden collapse.
👉 Keep temperature consistent and adjust as chicks grow.

❗2. Dirty Water or Feed Contamination

Unclean water spreads diseases like E. coli, salmonella, and coccidiosis.
👉 Always provide fresh, clean water.

❗3. Overcrowding

Crowding increases heat, stress, and disease spread.
👉 Maintain proper spacing.

❗4. Skipping Vaccination

Diseases like Newcastle, Gumboro, and Marek’s can wipe out the whole flock.
👉 Follow a correct vaccination schedule.

❗5. Poor Ventilation

Ammonia buildup causes respiratory diseases.
👉 Ensure airflow without creating direct cold drafts.

❗6. Sudden Feed Change

Shifting feed abruptly causes digestive shock.
👉 Introduce new feed gradually.

Healthy birds don’t happen by luck — they happen by good management.

🐐🔥 Why You Should Invest in Meat Goats — Especially the Boer Breed!

Goat farming is one of the fastest-growing livestock businesses today, and if you’re thinking of going into meat production, the Boer goat is one of the best choices you can make. Here’s why 👇

⭐ 1. Fast Growth Rate

Boer goats grow very fast compared to local breeds.
They reach market weight earlier, meaning quick return on investment.

⭐ 2. Excellent Meat Quality

Boer meat is tender, tasty, and preferred in many markets
which means higher selling price and stronger demand.

⭐ 3. High Fertility & Multiple Births

They reproduce quickly and often give twins or triplets.
More kids = More profit for the farmer.

⭐ 4. Strong Adaptability

Boer goats adapt well to harsh climates, survive stress, and gain weight fast even under semi-intensive systems.

⭐ 5. Good Crossbreeding Value

Crossing Boer with local breeds improves:
✔ Growth rate
✔ Meat yield
✔ Body size
✔ Hardiness

Perfect for upgrading local goat genetics.

⭐ 6. High Market Demand

Hotels, restaurants, and meat sellers prefer big, healthy goats.
Boer goats command premium prices during festive seasons.
