Tardigrades also known as Water bears or Moss piglets are a phyla of 8-legged segmented micro animals. They were described by the German zoologist, Johann August Ephraim Goeze in 1773 who called them "Kleiner Wasserbar"(Little water bear). In 1777, an Italian biologist, Lazzano Spallanzani named them Tardigrada which means "Slow steppers" There are about 1300 known species of Tardigrades. Tardigrades are usually about 0.5-1mm long when fully grown. They are short and plump with four pairs of legs (that is 8 legs). They can live for 30years without food or water. Tardigrades have survived all five recognized mass extinctions due to their plethora of survival characteristics including the ability to survive conditions that would be fatal to almost all other animals.
Their lifespan ranges from 3-4months for some species, up to 2yrs for other species. They have been in existence for about 600million years and believed to have been existing before Dinosaurs.
