Ibadan Chess Surge: DCA’s 4th Edition Draws 209 Young Strategists
By: Tobi Ajewole
In a resounding celebration of strategic minds, Divine Chess Academy (DCA) hosted its fourth edition chess tournament, drawing an unprecedented 209 young players. Proprietor Oluwatobi Bamidele could barely contain his thrill in a post-event interview, describing the turnout as “exciting” and far beyond expectations.
“Compared to the last edition where we had about 90 players, here we have over double,” Bamidele said, his voice brimming with pride. This marks explosive growth from the inaugural event’s mere 20 participants, then around 60 in the second, and 90 in the third. The surge reflects heightened awareness, parental support, school involvement, and backing from private organizations, transforming chess from a niche pursuit into a citywide passion.
Competition highlights included sharp victories across age groups. In the U-8 category, Omotunde Feranmi won, Adio Daniel took 2nd, and Adeniyi Adedunmoye placed 3rd. The U-12 saw Adaramola Michelle claim 1st, Aderoju Testimony 2nd, and Adeniyi Adedunmola 3rd. In U-16, Sambo Samson topped the field, followed by Olayode Goriola in 2nd and Ogunbayo Oluwafunminire in 3rd. Cash prizes went to top performers, while all 209 players received certificates of participation.
Bamidele spotlighted these standout talents, asserting they possess potential to compete globally. DCA plans an international classical tournament by mid-2026 to groom them for national and world stages. “We’ve seen players that can actually fight at the global level,” he affirmed.
The event further boosts chess’s vibrant future in Ibadan. “It’s going to be very, very amazing,” Bamidele predicted, crediting community momentum.
Bamidele urged parents: “Chess is a way of life,” revealing children’s temperament on the board like real life. He pushed for chess clubs, classes, and tournaments to build interaction and skills, debunking gambling myths and noting its value for business elites too.
