We’re pleased to announce a partnership between Bunkasa Agritech Limited and DELIVER Nigeria, a three-year initiative (2024–2027) supporting smallholder vegetable farmers in Kano and Kaduna States.

DELIVER Nigeria is led by Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), in partnership with East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation and Wageningen University & Research, focuses on improving production and marketing capacity, reducing post-harvest losses, strengthening market access, and promoting healthier diets, particularly for youth and women.

Through this partnership, Bunkasa will contribute to optimizing aggregation centers, improving post-harvest handling, and supporting capacity building across vegetable value chains, aligned with our broader food systems infrastructure work, including insights from Infrastructure Network for African Food Systems (INAFS).

Arewa Perishable Foodstuff Market Association

Mile 12 International Market in Lagos is the largest and busiest of its kind in the West African sub region. This market is run by the Arewa Perishable Foodstuff Market Association through a complex inter-state and international system of credit production, haulage and distribution. The main production base for the association is spread across eight core northern states where there are thousands of small farm holdings. At the end of each production cycle, road haulage kicks in to move the produce to markets in population and consumption centers in southern Nigeria, including Lagos and beyond.

The cycle begins with production by farmers which include members of the Association but with very low capacity and who are not well positioned to access conventional credit. The association then moves in to pool resources to provide credit to as many farming members as it can cater for while also providing cover for others who source funds from other non banking sources. Members also buy pre harvest produce from other farms to supplement the output of their own farms. This way, members are able to purchase irrigation equipment and accessories, fertilizers, other farm input and pay for labor. A few are even empowered top buy light trucks that are used to move their harvests from the farms to designed haulage centers.

This way, the association maintains its influence at all levels from farm to market and is thus able to bring stability to the market in terms of supply and pricing . Almost everything the members of the association produce on their farms or purchase from other sources including the West African sub region are destined for the Mile 12 International Market.
