There are more than enough reasons why we must like, share, comment, and amplify the voices of sincere Muslim creators on the internet.
The hypocrisy is becoming too glaring to ignore.
Too often, sections of the Nigerian media and social media space appear to give massive attention to stories that fit a particular narrative about Muslims, Islam, and the. But when Muslims become the victims of horrific crimes, suddenly the outrage disappears and the silence becomes deafening.
Take the disturbing case of the women accused of allegedly disguising themselves as Muslims while abducting children from Muslim families in Abuja and reportedly transporting them to other parts of southern Nigeria. If the identities and religious backgrounds were reversed, imagine the headlines, the debates, the hashtags, and the endless condemnation we would be seeing everywhere.
But because the victims are Muslims, some people would rather ignore the story, downplay it, or even dismiss it as “fake news” without caring about the pain of the victims and their families.
This is exactly why we must build and support our own platforms and voices.
Support sincere Muslim creators. Like their posts. Share their content. Comment. Engage. Amplify their voices.
If we do not tell our own stories, others will tell them for us—and they may not always tell them fairly.
The double standards are glaring. The hypocrisy is obvious.
