Sickness comes with a lot of pain.
This kind of sickness was numerous: there were body pains, the pain of knowing she would not survive it, and then the pain of becoming a burden.
That was her major pain.
She lived for everyone.
Every day of her healthy days, she woke up and served.
The first thing she did in the morning was pray for everyone. Then she planned her day to make sure it fit around everyone's activities.
She cooked what everyone would like whether she liked it or not.
She got a job that would allow her time for everything everyone was doing.
Doing a party? She's got time for you.
School activities? She's got time.
Need someone to help you pick up some supplies? She is the one.
Having a program on a Monday morning? She will attend.
She didn't ask for much.
She had nothing expensive.
No car, no house, no good clothes, no costly hair, never gone on any vacation, no life's achievements.
But she was happy.
Until she became sick.
Initially, everyone rallied around her.
There was always someone to take her to the hospital, cook, and clean up.
But after a while, life got busy.
They had work.
They had other engagements.
You won't blame them.
They needed to survive too.
The sickness was taking forever, and she had become a burden.
She got tired too.
She hated seeing the disdain in their eyes,
the gloom in their voices,
the distance in their feelings.
They didn't say anything to her, but she heard everything they didn't say: that she stank, that she was useless, that she made them waste time and money, that she needed to be gone so they could move on with their lives.
She wanted to be free from pain too.
So she smiled the day she took her last breath.
She came into the world crying, but she left smiling.
Peace!

The problem is, I do not understand this new me. I suddenly became a restless and unfulfilled person. “Is there more to life, or is this it?” I would ask.
Who am I? What purpose am I here to fulfill? I am a child of God, and being a mother and raising a nation should be a purpose, right?
Of course it is. But why do I not find fulfillment in it? Why do I feel insecure, anxious, and limited?
Then I began to look at my life goals, and I asked the question, “What kind of mother would this child want to have? A mother who would say she gave up her dreams because she had a child? The mother who pursued her dreams and abandoned her child? Or the one who found balance in the midst of chaos?”
