I told someone that Enzo Maresca wouldn’t have lost to Paris Saint‑Germain. He asked what made me so confident, so here is my explanation:

Unlike Liam Rosenior, Maresca understands that PSG are a high-intensity pressing side. Their strategy is simple: they allow you to keep the ball in dangerous areas, press aggressively until you make a mistake, and then capitalise on that mistake to score.

That’s exactly why, in the FIFA Club World Cup final, Maresca made sure we didn’t keep the ball in risky areas. Instead, we flipped the script and did to them exactly what they intended to do to us—and it worked.

If you look at all the goals PSG scored yesterday, they came from our mistakes. Those mistakes were largely self-inflicted, caused by unnecessary back passes to the goalkeeper while trying to play out from the back. Against a team like PSG, that approach is extremely risky.

Maresca would never adopt that kind of tactic against such opposition, especially knowing that our defence and goalkeeper are not particularly reliable. That would have been tactical su***de.

This is where Rosenior got it wrong. I expected him to understand this better, especially considering he has faced PSG before in the French league and even beaten them.
