These are points to remember so that the sessions are well arranged. Hints also caution the facilitator to be aware of factors which might hinder the achievement of targeted objectives.
14. Extension Activity
Since the development of life skills is closely linked to the way people see themselves in relation to their community, it is a good idea to encourage different forms of community service as much as possible so that students develop understanding of themselves and others and confidence to interact.

INTRODUCTORY PHASE (5 minutes)
Children identify soap, water, and basin and then tell the use of each item.
EXPERIENCING PHASE (5 minutes)
Children listen attentively to a story below about YINKA’s family.
YINKA’s Family
YINKA has three children, Sarah, Tobi and Kamo who go to school every morning. Tobi wears clean clothes but does not like to bathe, clean teeth and comb his hair. Kato, the youngest child of six years wakes up early and tries to clean his body. Sometimes he wears a dirty shirt because he cannot wash and dry it at night. Sarah, the eldest child checks and helps her brothers every morning before they go to school.
SHARING OF EXPERIENCING PHASE (15 minutes)
Pupils discuss the following questions:
(i) What do you think makes Tobi not like bathing or brushing his teeth?
(ii) If you were Kamo what would you do to wear a clean shirt?
(iii) If you were Sarah, what would you do to help Tobi and Kamo get ready for school?
(iv) Why is it important to keep the parts of the body and clothes clean?
(v) When do you normally wash your hands, face, teeth, whole body and clothes?
EVALUATION PHASE (5 minutes)
Pupils in their exercise books answer the following questions:
(i) Give reasons why we wash our hands.
(ii) Give the three most important times to wash our hands.
SELF EVALUATION
Teacher uses questions...
(i) To what extent were the objectives achieved?
(ii) How was the pupils’ participation/involvement in the lesson?
.. To assess the learning process.
Hints
1. The following lesson should be practical for children to learn how to wash parts of their body.
2. The teacher may use other interactive (participatory) methods.
