Just because someone is muscular does NOT mean they are athletic ❌🙅‍♀️
The nervous system (CNS) is king when it comes to jumping high, sprinting fast & changing direction efficiently 💯 It’s the CNS job to co ordinate motor unit & therefore complex muscular recruitment patterns (multiple muscle groups must contract & relax at once) that maximise not only the “skill” of the movement but also the “capacity” 💯
If you are not exposing your neuromuscular system to movements (strength, power, speed etc) that train the body as one (unit NOT in isolation ie think compound, multi joint) you are not developing your CNS ability to be efficient & athletic đź’Ş
Training like a body builder & isolating every muscle group misses out on enhancing the CNS ability to become efficient & athletic 🤦‍♂️ moreover, the athlete might look muscular AF & gives the impression of being “athletic” but in reality they lack the ability of their CNS to recruit motor units > muscle fibres as one unit & efficiently as possible for athletic tasks that require the CNS to recruit in links and chains (& co ordinate complex contraction of muscle groups & relax others)
This is why IMO the nervous system is king when it comes to athletic development & it would be better to see an athletes nervous system (& how efficient or in efficient it is) rather than their muscular system as this is what dictates sports performance 👊
Note; Yes the muscular system is important because this is what creates contraction & therefore Force but the nervous system is what controls contraction & without it we are just slabs of meat (thank you - honours supervisor back all those years ago ❤️)

Athletes are different today…….
because the world is different today.
Coaches have always talked about focus….
don’t get distracted….
block out the noise.
But it’s different now.
Today, athletes carry a phone with them almost 24-7.
It pulls at them constantly.
Distracts them constantly.
Especially young athletes that don’t know anything else.
Humans have a hard time being still….
we get bored easily.
We rarely feel that we’re breathing….
or feel the stress in our body.
And phones make this even harder.
So how does this negatively effect athletes?
In a lot of ways, but I’m going to focus on one main problem.
Think about how often we say……
“they’re in the zone.”
We say this when an athlete looks unstoppable.
They’re having the best performance of their career without even trying.
Everything looks effortless.
This can only happen when an athlete is calm.
And I don’t mean just their body being calm.
Their mind and specifically their brain waves need to be calm.
When the brain slows down….
the body is loose and coordinated….
the eyes see everything….
reaction is effortless….
and the game plan is easily remembered.
Constant phone use is the opposite of this.
The phone is a stimulus….
that for most people rarely stops.
So brain waves are always moving a little faster than normal….
and the ability to focus and stay calm under stress gets harder…
and harder….
because the mind and body never get a chance to practice calm.
WHAT WE PRACTICE GROWS STRONGER.
If stimulation is what we practice….
calm and focused will be hard to come by….
especially on game day.
There’s a lot of things we practice with our athletes.
Practicing staying off the phone is becoming really important….
and it’s going to become more and more important….
for all athletes to become as focused as possible…
and to be able to handle any stress that comes their way.

The keys to LATE GOOD ACCELERATION !!!
RETHINKING ACCELERATION IN SPRINTING
At ALTIS, we emphasize the rhythmical rise of the center of mass during acceleration. It's all about the torso and shin angles getting more vertical, and the center of mass rising with each step until the sprinter is upright. This smooth rise starts from early acceleration, visible even in the first few steps.
Recent research supports moving away from old terms like
'the drive phase.' Instead, think of late acceleration as climbing up a hill or big stairs, with the sprinter 'climbing' down the track, getting taller each step.
% SPRINTER DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS
The rate of 'climbing' during acceleration varies with the sprinter's speed. A faster sprinter might take over 30m to fully stand, reaching high speeds. A slower sprinter could be upright by 10m - and that's perfectly okay!
As sprinters develop and get faster, they'll naturally take longer to reach maximum velocity and to stand fully upright. It's crucial not to force young or slower sprinters to mimic elite sprinters' patterns. For example, while Elaine Thompson-Herah might take 30m to get upright due to her speed, expecting the same from less experienced athletes can be unrealistic.
Understanding these differences is key to effective coaching and athlete development.

Simplicity is KEY
altis & If an athlete runs technically well in training, but falls apart during a high pressure race, what is that telling us?
? Is that a technical issue? A psychological issue? A mechanical issue, whereby there is some musculoskeletal
'dysfunction' that only reveals itself under states of higher arousal?
§ The way in which we answer these questions is through a 'SYSTEMS APPROACH', and this forms the key to the
ALTIS Performance Therapy Methodology.
Our FREE EBOOK 'A Systems Approach to Health & Performance' gives a brief primer of what systems thinking means, and how we can apply it to our current training environments.
