FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has rejected claims that he manipulated the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State and other parts of the South-South to help President Bola Tinubu defeat Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.
Wike spoke on Wednesday while addressing journalists in Abuja, saying the allegations were based on a false story spread mainly on social media.

The minister had earlier sparked controversy during an interview on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, where he said the G5 governors used a political strategy that helped Obi gain votes in some parts of the South-South.

Teenagers, adult workers return to site where 37 deceased miners were arrested by NSCDC

Illegal miners in Niger state have returned to the mining sites after 37 died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The miners which include underage, adults and women were seen mining gold in M.I Wushishi.

On Thursday, the NSCDC said the suspected illegal miners were arrested during operations conducted on September 15 and 16 around Lt Gen Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna, the Niger state capital.

Suberu Aniviye, suspended NSCDC commandant in Niger state, had said “scores of the detained suspects were found dead in the early hours of Thursday following a suspected outbreak of disease”.

Although some miners stayed away from the pits following the NSCDC raid and the deaths of the suspected illegal miners in custody, many others returned to the mining sites.

The miners said they had little choice but to continue mining, describing the activity as their only source of livelihood and means of survival.

A visit by TheCable to the M.I. Wushishi mining site on Saturday found no security personnel at the site.

The miners were working at the site with shovels, picks and other hand tools, digging into the exposed earth.

Some scooped loose soil into sacks and pans while others used the flowing stream to separate the excavated material.

Piles of freshly dug earth and muddy soil were scattered around the site.
