You can convert a petrol generator to run on LPG/propane with a conversion kit. It’s a common mod, but you need to do it right for safety and performance.

*How it works*
Petrol generators use a carburetor to mix liquid fuel and air. LPG is already a gas, so you replace/add a system that meters LPG gas and mixes it with air before it enters the engine.

*Basic steps*

1. *Get a conversion kit*
Buy a kit made for your generator’s engine size. Kits usually include:
- LPG regulator/regulator valve
- Gas mixer or adapter that bolts onto the carburetor
- Hoses, fittings, and a demand regulator
- Instructions for your engine model
Brands like Century Fuel Products, US Carburetion, and Motenergy make them. Match it to 2-15kW, single cylinder, etc.

2. *Install the mixer/adapter*
- Turn off fuel and disconnect the spark plug for safety.
- The mixer sits between the air filter and the carburetor, or replaces the carburetor’s fuel bowl. It lets LPG gas mix with intake air.
- Some kits keep the original carburetor so you can switch between petrol and LPG. Others replace it.

3. *Mount the regulator*
The LPG tank outputs high pressure. The regulator drops it to low pressure the engine can use. Mount it securely, away from heat and moving parts.

4. *Connect hoses and check for leaks*
Use LPG-rated hose and brass fittings only. After connecting, use soapy water on all joints with the gas on - bubbles = leak. Fix before starting.

5. *Adjust and test*
Start the generator on LPG. You’ll likely need to adjust the load block or idle screw on the regulator for smooth running. It should run without surging or stalling under load.

*Important things to know*
- *Power loss*: LPG has ∼10-15% less energy than petrol, so expect slightly lower max output.
- *Oil changes*: LPG burns cleaner, so oil stays cleaner longer, but follow the manual.
- *Dual fuel*: Most kits let you switch back to petrol. Don’t run both at once.
- *Safety*: Never run the generator indoors. LPG is heavier than air and pools on the ground. Store tanks upright, outdoors, away from heat.

Here’s the full picture:

1. How the conversion works
You’re not replacing the engine. You add a kit that feeds LPG into the engine’s air intake.

1. *LPG regulator* – Drops high pressure from the gas cylinder to low pressure the engine can use.
2. *Gas mixer/venturi* – Fits between the carburetor and air filter. It mixes LPG with air before it enters the cylinder.

4. *LPG-rated hose & clamps* – Heavy-duty hose made for gas. Regular fuel hose will crack and leak.
5. *Load adjuster screw* – Fine-tunes the air-fuel mix so it idles smoothly on gas.

The carburetor stays in place. On startup you run on petrol for 1-2 min to warm the engine, then switch to LPG.

2. What you gain
- *Lower running cost*: In most of Nigeria right now, LPG costs less per kWh than petrol. You’ll see 20-40% savings if you run daily.
- *Cleaner engine*: LPG burns cleaner, so less carbon buildup. Oil stays cleaner, spark plugs last longer, less carburetor cleaning.
- *Better storage*: LPG doesn’t go bad like petrol. No stale fuel issues after 2 weeks.
- *Less odor/smoke*: Exhaust is cleaner and less smelly.
- *Backup option*: Keep petrol as backup if gas finishes.

3. What you lose
- *Power drop*: Expect 5-10% less output on LPG. A 5kVA generator gives ∼4.5kVA on gas.
- *Cold starts*: LPG doesn’t vaporize well when cold, so you start on petrol.
- *Upfront cost*: Kit + labor is ₦18k-₦45k for 2-5kVA sets. Pays back in 1-3 months if you run 4+ hrs/day.
- *Power loss risk if installed badly*: A bad mix setting makes it stall under load.

4. Installation process
1. Mount the regulator on the frame, away from the exhaust.
2. Install the gas mixer between carburetor and air filter. No drilling into the carburetor itself.
3. Connect LPG hose from cylinder to regulator, regulator to mixer.
4. Test every joint with soapy water. No bubbles = no leak.
5. Start on petrol, warm up, switch to LPG, adjust the load screw for smooth idle.
6. Test under load with a bulb, fan, or fridge.

Takes 30-60 min for someone who’s done it before.

5. Safety rules you can’t skip
- Run the generator outside, in open air. LPG is heavier than air and pools if leaked.
- Use only LPG-rated hose and clamps. Test for leaks every time you change a cylinder.
- Keep cylinder upright, away from heat and direct sun.
- Turn off cylinder valve when not in use.
- Don’t install indoors, in a shop, or near drains.

6. What generators can be converted
Most 2kVA to 8kVA single-cylinder 4-stroke generators: Honda, Lutian, Firman, Senci, Tiger, Senwei, Elepaq.
2-stroke generators and inverter generators are usually not suitable.

7. Running cost example
3kVA generator:
- Petrol: ∼1L/hr at ₦980 = ₦980/hr
- LPG: ∼0.9kg/hr at ₦1,200/kg = ₦1,080/hr
Prices change by location. In areas where LPG is ₦1,000/kg or less, you save money per hour.
