INTODUCTION TO IELTS
IELTS is an acronym for International English Language Testing System. It is divided into two categories:
1. IELTS Academic which is for study
2. IELTS General Training for work/immigration
IELTS has four subtests which are:
1. Reading
2. Writing
3. Speaking
4. Listening
Now, let us look at the four subtests one after the other.
IELTS READING TEST
The IELTS Reading test comes with three passages and the duration is one hour. Each Reading passage lasts for 20 minutes and comes with its own question types.
TYPES OF QUESTIONS TO EXPECT
1. Multiple choice questions
2. Short answer questions
3. Sentence completion
4. Summary completion
5. True, False, and Not Given questions
6. Cause and effect
7. Choosing answers from a list
8. Labeling diagrams
9. Classifying information
10. Matching headings
11. Matching terms and definitions
IELTS SPEAKING TEST
The IELTS Speaking test is the first test taken in IELTS. It has three sections which are:
PART 1
Here you will be asked personal questions like:
1. What is your name?
2. May I see your proof of identification?
3. May I know about your family background?
4. Could you tell me about your neighbourhood?
5. What do you like to do in your spare time?
6. How often do you visit the ocean?
7. And lots more.
PART 2
Here you will be given a task card and on it a question will be written. You are expected to talk about what is written on the task card for at least 2 minutes.
PART 3
Here you will be asked a few questions about what was discussed in Part 2.
IELTS WRITING TEST
The writing test has two tasks.
TASK 1
Here the Academic candidates are asked to describe and summarize a diagram while the General Training candidates are asked to write a letter which could be formal or informal.
TASK 2
Here you will be asked to write an essay of at least 250 words in 40 minutes. It will either be an argumentative or expository essay.
IELTS LISTENING TEST
This section lasts for about 30 minutes and here you will listen to a recording. There will be a conversation between two people and you will need to listen attentively as the tape is played only ONCE.
The IELTS Listening section consists of the following:
1. Listening for assumption
2. Listening for similar meanings
3. Listening for time
4. Listening for frequency
5. Listening for description
6. Listening for emotion
7. Listening for numbers
8. Listening for classification
9. Listening for chronology
10. Listening for negative meaning
11. Listening for comparisons and contrast

This book gives you valuable tips on IELTS exam. It covers the Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening sections of IELTS. After reading this book you cannot score below 8.0 in IELTS.
