Use and Storage

Gas cylinders should be stored upright and secured at their location (wall, post, etc) at approximately 2/3 of the height of the cylinder. Chain, straps, cable wire, etc can be used to secure the cylinder in place. Restraints should be secure so that the cylinders will not fall over. Gas cylinders should not be stored in hallways, aisles, walkways, exit areas, or unprotected areas. Empty cylinders should be marked “Empty,” or “MT,” and stored away from full cylinders and separated by hazard class. Empty cylinders should also be stored with their valves in the closed position. Cylinders should be kept away from all flames and heat sources. Cylinders should be stored in protected, ventilated, and dry areas. Cylinders should be stored at least 20 feet away from combustible materials. If cylinders are designed for a valve protection cap, the cap should be on the cylinder when the cylinder is in use or connected for use.
When opening a cylinder valve, do so slowly and only with the regulator in place. If cylinders require a wrench for opening, have the wrench stored nearby. Make sure the proper tools are available, especially if a cylinder required non-sparking tools. When a cylinder is not in use or empty, make sure the valve is closed. Leak checks should be done before each cylinder use. This can be performed simply by applying soapy water around the connections. If you see bubbles, there is a gas leak.
