Behind every couple’s separation or long-term conflict are two people who choose their ego over their relationship.

Sometimes, the path back to connection is as simple as initiating a repair first, saying sorry first, or reaching out first. But when you both choose your ego, you choose to stay divided. And I’m not going to act all perfect, we’ve been there too, where we chose our ego over the relationship…it’s never going to work that way

In my practice as a marriage therapist, I see this daily: two good people who deeply love each other, trapped in a cold war because neither wants to blink first. Ego tells you that giving in is a sign of weakness or an admission of defeat. But in a marriage, keeping score means you both lose.

True relational strength is about choosing the connection over being right. It takes immense maturity to look past your own hurt pride and say, “This relationship matters more to me than my ego.”

If you are stuck in a cycle of silence or conflict today, ask yourself: what is your ego costing you?
