If you have a volleyball that would be ideal, but if not you can always go to the half swing sequence/resisted variation. The approach jump throws are the variation in my previous post to practice the approach and spiking sequence in the air. Ball doesn't need to be weighted and intensity in the throw doesn't need to be high! 

The half swing sequence is something I'd recommend for those learning the technique or want to maintain the pattern when away from the gym. It can be done resisted and/or at a faster rate like in the actual spike. But of course, we gotta get the actually skill in if we can. In BFV we build the technique with drills like these and progress into drills that incorporate more airborne mechanics and timing (with a set/over a net etc). We gotta have that base before progressing and take one step at a time.

These are for quality over quantity, and I always encourage reflecting on these drills even after the fact, and not just relying on the reps and sets. Of course, we don't want to overdo it (especially with the jumps and hits) but practice the movement, gradually increase the intensity, and learn and remember the feel for the movement. I'd go for 10 reps of 2-3 reps for the half swings, and gradually working into a maximal spike with emphasis on technique for the spikes 2-5 reps (can do per side too) and about 2- reps of the approach jump throws. Lots of rest in between. Train the pattern fresh for these, depending on the athlete/level etc. A lot more to it but hope this helps!
