Report of the wheelchair rugby clinic at Drostenburg special primary school.

On June 5, 2023, it was a day full of excitement and adventure for twenty enthusiastic participants between the ages of 11 and 13 at the Drostenburg special primary school in Amsterdam Southeast. They had the opportunity to get acquainted with the spectacular sport of wheelchair rugby during a clinic organized by the Amsterdam Terminators wheelchair rugby club.

This amazing event took place in the context of the Amsterdam Quad Rugby Tournament, which took place later that week in the Sporthallen Zuid on June 9, 10 and 11, 2023. The clinic was the perfect opportunity for young sports enthusiasts to experience the sport and get a taste of the tournament.

The clinic was led by three inspiring players: Hector Loma, Resul Karabulut and Revando van Doorn. What makes these three men so special is that they are not only experienced wheelchair rugby players, but also that they all attended Drostenburg primary school. It was a wonderful reunion for them and they were delighted to share their knowledge and passion for the sport with the young participants.

With a lot of energy and enthusiasm, the children started the clinic. Hector, Resul and Revando made sure everyone felt at ease right away. They explained the rules of wheelchair rugby, showed some basic skills and gave useful tips on how to maneuver well in a wheelchair.

Then it was time to see the players in action! The children were divided into teams and got the chance to play wheelchair rugby themselves. It was great to see how quickly they adapted to the movements and strategies of the game. The smiling faces and joy of the children were priceless.

During the clinic, a great atmosphere of teamwork and camaraderie emerged. The participants encouraged each other, worked together and learned valuable lessons about perseverance and resilience. It was heartwarming to see how everyone supported and encouraged each other, regardless of their skill level. Resul, Hector and Revando were surprised how quickly and well the students picked up wheelchair driving!

The clinic was a great success and an enormously fun experience for all involved. The children not only had the chance to discover a unique sport, but also to meet three inspiring wheelchair rugby players who motivated them to pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they encounter.

With so much positive energy and inspiration in the air, we look forward to continuing this wonderful sport and hope that even more young people will have the chance to experience the excitement of wheelchair rugby.
