The air is getting a little crisper, the days are getting shorter, and the leaves are putting on their incredible show. π
As the seasons change around us, it's a good reminder that our inner world shifts, too.
It's completely okay to not feel okay. Your energy might be a little lower, your motivation might feel different, and that's just part of being human. Instead of fighting it, what if we gave ourselves permission to honor this change?
As a coach, I've seen how powerful a few simple mindset shifts can be. Here are a couple of my top NLP tips to use:
β¨ Practice Gratitude. It can be easy to focus on what feels difficult, but shifting your attention to what you're grateful forβno matter how smallβcan instantly change your outlook. Try this: before you even get out of bed, name three things you're thankful for today. It's a simple ritual that builds a muscle for joy.
β¨ Create a Personal 'Anchor'. Choose a small action, like clasping your hands or touching your thumb to your pointer finger. When you're feeling happy or calm, do this action. Over time, your brain will link that feeling to the action, so you can 'trigger' that calm feeling whenever you need it.
Remember, you are stronger than you seem....

Have you ever been caught off guard by a wave of emotion triggered by a sound, a scent or a place?
Recently, I took my daughter to play squash for the first time. As we stepped onto the court, the echo of the ball striking the walls instantly transported me back to my youthβa rush of energy, movement, and laughter flooded my senses. That familiar sound didnβt just signal a game; it βοΈ anchored me in a joyful state I hadnβt realized Iβd been missing.
Reflecting on this moment, I recognized a powerful principle from NLP coaching: the impact of anchors.
In NLP, an "anchor" is a stimulus that triggers a specific emotional state or memory. For me, the sound of the squash ball became an anchor, instantly reconnecting me with the joy and presence of my younger days.
This is exactly what we call an anchor in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). In everyday life, weβre anchored all the time without realizing it:
πΈA smell that reminds you of childhood
πΆA song that brings back a holiday
π§πΌββοΈ A place that instantly makes you feel calm
Once set, that βοΈanchor can be used deliberately to βtriggerβ that emotion any time you need it. They can help you:

Boost confidence before a presentation
β
Shift from stress to calm in challenging conversations
β
Access joy or motivation when your energy dips
Hereβs a simple anchoring technique I use with coaching clients:
- Choose the emotional state you want to access (eg.confidence, calm, joy)
- Recall a vivid memory when you felt that way. Really see it, hear it, feel it.
- Intensify the feelingβlet it build in your body. Smile, breathe.
- Set the anchorβapply a unique gesture (like pressing two fingers together or touching your wrist) at the peak of the feeling.
- Test the anchorβafter a short break, trigger the gesture and notice if the feeling returns.
- Repeat with different memories to strengthen the effect.
