Now that the World Cup is over for another four years (😅), what did everyone make of the NFL stadiums that had been repurposed for "soccer" during the tournament?

Personally, I was surprised how different they all were. Football stadiums around the world have become fairly homogenised in recent years, so it was nice to see some wonky mismatched stands, bizarre towers and (in the case of Boston), a massive gap at one end where they'd planted some shrubs and made a nice garden! (see picture 7). Could probably do without the mega-jumbotron screens, but that's just me.

England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 v Argentina 🇦🇷 memories Part 1.

France '98 - we'd thrown a couple of tents in the boot of a car, got the ferry over to Calais and then driven to Lille/Lens for the last England group stage against Colombia with the intention of following England all the way to the final in Paris. No tickets, no accommodation, no problem.

First stop - St Etienne and a showdown with our old foes Argentina.

We arrived in St Etienne a few days before the match and found this sign on the floor in the main square, so took turns holding it in the hope of securing tickets. Within five minutes of me holding it, I got offered a ticket, job done ✅

We camped quite close to the city centre, initially next to a group of Argentinians, who'd constructed a huge barbecue out of things they'd found on the campsite and on which they cooked massive steaks, putting our diet of ham and cheese baguettes to shame. We played football with them, but they moved on when the campsite started filling up with England fans. Our new neighbours were these lads from Grimsby, who spent the majority of their time skinning up massive bifters. Here's me with my precious ticket.

Gearing up for kick off. The main England end was to the left, Argentina to the right.

Alan Shearer scoring a penalty after ten minutes. Six minutes later Michael Owen scored his incredible solo goal in this same net and I genuinely thought we were going to win the World Cup.

Then Argentina equalised, Beckham got sent off, Sol Campbell scored the winner in extra time (disallowed) and England lost on penalties and were out.

Back at the campsite afterwards there was a subdued atmosphere. That was until someone put The Stone Roses "One Love" on full blast, after which a party vibe returned, tunes and boozing into the night.

The next morning we packed up the tents and drove non-stop all the way back to Derbyshire, the World Cup dream over for another four years. Ah well, we'll win it next time surely.

England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 v Argentina 🇦🇷 memories Part 2.

Japan '02 - Four years on from St Etienne, we met again in Sapporo on the northern-most Japanese island of Hokkaido. To say Japan was an eye-opener was an understatement. Instead of being treated like pariahs, the Japanese - in the grip of Beckham-mania - treated us England fans like film stars, school girls screaming (in a good way!) at us on zebra crossings and everyone wanting a selfie (camera phones had just been invented over there) or to have a drink with you. Fantastic.

After a few days in mind-bending Tokyo, where we'd met and made friends (for life) with some top Watford lads, we'd got the bullet train up north to Sapporo for this second group-stage match against our old pals from South America.

Sapporo was beautiful, a lot more chilled and provincial than Tokyo, the locals super friendly.

There were some bizarre juxtapositions throughout this whole trip. As previously mentioned we were treated like bona fide superstars everywhere we went, non stop photoshoots 😅

Me and my mate Kev in the ground. Kev's a Leeds fan and we were sat in front of Leeds legend Chris Kamara during the match, so I took a picture of the two of them together. When we got home and developed the photos I'd managed to cut Kamara off the photo completely 😂

The Sapporo Dome was an indoor arena. The England end was to our left...

..the Argentina end to our right. During this time Argentina was going through huge economic turmoil, but they'd still managed to bring thousands of fans with them.

After this match we headed back to Tokyo on the bullet train and then on to Osaka for the obligatory England World Cup group stage 0-0 match (against Nigeria), before returning home after two unforgettable weeks in Japan.

Struggling to get too excited about the World Cup this year (especially after seeing Tuchel's England squad 🙈), and I won't be going across the pond for any matches.

But if I was, I'd be heading to Mexico I reckon, and top of the stadium list would be this beauty in Guadalupe, followed by the mighty Azteca.

Anyone heading out?
