Pompeii Gladius

The classic Roman legionary sword β€” straight parallel edges running the full length of the blade, finishing in a short triangular point.

24 inch blade, 32 inches overall. Hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel. Turned hardwood hilt in the four-part Roman arrangement, with a large rounded pommel.

Supplied with a metal-bound scabbard with twin suspension rings and a decorated chape.

Every blade is forged to order in Kathmandu β€” nothing is held in stock. Order it as shown, or customise it: blade length, blade finish, handle material and scabbard colour are all yours to choose. Want something different again? Send us a drawing and we'll quote before any steel is cut.

Two khukuris can look identical and be built completely differently. The difference is hidden under the handle.

Take the handle off a kukri and you'll find one of three constructions:

πŸ”Ή Full flat tang (panawal): the steel runs the full width and length of the grip, and the butt is forged from the same bar. Rivets clamp the scales along the whole handle. It's the strongest and heaviest of the three.

πŸ”Ή Full rat tail tang (paro): a narrow bar runs right through the handle and is peened over the chapri (butt cap), which clamps the handle tight between two pieces of steel. It's lighter, balanced forward for chopping, and the traditional Nepali build used on Gurkha service patterns.

πŸ”Ή Semi rat tail tang: a short stub that stops partway into the handle. The butt cap is a separate part the blade never reaches, so glue does all the work. It's fine for display, but it works loose under hard use.

Here's the catch: once the handle is on, a full rat tail and a semi rat tail look exactly the same. Same bolster, same solid grip, same metal cap.

Our new guide shows all three with the handles removed. It also covers:
βœ… How to tell which one you're holding
βœ… Why we set handles with epoxy instead of traditional laha
βœ… Which tang suits the work you have in mind

Every kukri/khukuri on our site states its tang construction, so nothing is left to guesswork.

Kukri Tang Types: Full Flat, Full Rat Tail and Semi Tang Explained The tang is the part of the blade you cannot see, and it decides whether a khukuri survives a decade of chopping or comes apart in a season. Take the handle away and the three common constructions look nothing alike. Put it back on

Just bought a sword. How do you know it's any good?

Twist the grip β€” no movement, no click. Check the tang shoulders for cracks. Sight down the blade for straightness. Run your eye along the edge. Flex it gently and watch it come back true.

Five checks, two minutes. Do them before you swing at anything.

Full guide β€” inspection, flex, balance, backyard targets and how to read every cut:

How to Test a Sword: Inspection, Handling, Flex and Backyard Cutting Cutting is the last step of testing a sword, not the first. Before you swing at anything you check the fittings, the tang, the edge and the flex, then learn what the blade wants to do in your hands. The failures that hurt people

Together for Nepal.

On 26 August, a glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border sent a flood down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli. Rasuwa and Nuwakot β€” the valleys just north of our workshop β€” lost homes, bridges, roads and whole settlements. Thousands of families need shelter, food and medical help right now.

If you would like to help, you can give directly to the Government of Nepal's Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. Cards, QR and international payments in USD or NPR are all accepted.

Everest Forge does not collect, receive or handle any part of your donation. Not a cent passes through us. We are not fundraising and we are not running a percentage-of-sales promotion. We are just pointing at the official channel and explaining how to use it.

βš”οΈ NEW FEATURE: BUILD YOUR OWN BLADE

You choose the specification. We forge it.

Blade finish. Handle material. Fittings. Scabbard. Construction. Engraving.

Every choice updates a live preview, and the price is on screen before you order β€” no quote, no waiting, no email chain.

This is not a stock blade with your name added at the end. Your configuration goes to our forge floor in Tokha-3, Kathmandu as a build sheet, and the blade is forged to it from raw steel. πŸ‡³πŸ‡΅

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… "If Rambo was real, this is the knife he would use."

That's Justin Scholl, writing on 10 August 2026 β€” his words, not ours:

"This knife is incredible! It feels solid and powerful in your hands, like it could handle anything. The build quality is outstanding, and it's as rugged as it is practical. If you want reliability and strength, this is the one."

Every blade in the series is hand-forged in Tokha-3, Kathmandu by our own smiths β€” 5160 high-carbon steel, full tang, oil-quenched and tempered, sharpened and ready to work. Not a wall hanger.

Thank you Justin. Reviews like this are why the forge fires stay lit.

Most people get knife law wrong because they think it's one question.

It's three:

Can you own it?
Can you carry it in public?
Can you import it?

Different answers. Same country. Same day.

Example: in Australia you can own a fixed blade, you need a lawful excuse to carry it, and a double-edged dagger needs a permit just to clear customs. Three separate rules, one knife.

We've put together a plain-English guide for the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Germany and the EU β€” with the official government links for each, so you can check it yourself.

"What the heck is a parang?"

Advanced Knife Bro just put our hand-forged Machete Parang through a proper workout β€” chopping, sharpening, and honest talk about how the blade holds up. No staged tests, no pool noodles.

A parang isn't a Latin machete. Thicker spine, weight forward, convex edge β€” built to bite into green wood and vines rather than whip through grass. Our smiths in Kathmandu forge them by hand, the same hands that make our kukris.

Worth a watch if you've ever wondered what separates the two. πŸ‘‡
