It's Matariki time here in Aotearoa. The name is a shortened version of Ngā mata o te ariki o Tāwhirimatea which means the eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea.
According to Māori legend Tāwhirimātea, the god of wind and weather, was enraged after losing a battle to his brother Tūmatauenga, god of war and humanity.
In his anger he flew up to live with his father Ranginui. He plucked out his eyes and threw them into the sky where they remain stuck to Ranginui’s chest. This also explains the unpredictable nature of the wind as Tāwhiri is blind.
