Winter is coming 🥶 and as surfer as the water cools, we will be more prone to surfers ear!

What is surfers ear?

Surfer's ear is the common name for abnormal bone growth (exostoses) within the ear canal.

Irritation from cold wind and water exposure causes the bone surrounding the ear canal to develop lumps of new bony growth which constrict the ear canal.

Where the ear canal is actually blocked by this condition, water and wax can become trapped and ear infections can follow.

Although the condition is called Surfer’s ear, due to its prevalence among cold water surfers, it isn’t limited to surfing and can also occur in any activity with cold, wet, windy conditions such as windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, jet skiing, diving, etc.

Most avid surfers have at least some mild bone growths (exostoses), causing little to no problems, but the condition builds up over time so it’s important to take preventive measures early, preferably whenever surfing.

Signs and symptoms:

Decreased hearing or hearing loss, temporary or ongoing
Increased prevalence of ear infections, causing ear pain
Difficulty clearing your ears after a surf.
Exostosis, once developed, stays forever without medical treatment. In other words, surgery, which can either mean the doctor making an incision behind your ear and using a drill to remove the bony growth, or the doctor using a micro chisel inside the ear canal to eliminate the bony growth.

Recovery is usually quick (a few weeks staying away from the water!) but the condition could come back if you don’t take preventative measures – so use your Surf Budz every time you go near the water!
