Kanoa () is from Ngāti Māhanga, Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, Ngati Ranginui and Ngai te Rangi, with a side of Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤙🏾.

Part of the Muscle in the middle of our Waka Kanoa is down for anything on, or in the water 🍤 🦞 🏄‍♀️ 🏊‍♀️ 🛶.

“Going hard with the brothers on the water is pretty harty, but when you look at the end result, first at nationals, going to worlds, in the end it’s all worth it”.

“I’m not super fit myself but I’m trying to get there and I’ve seen the brothers do it and I’m assuming you can do anything, like run far easy, play any sport, I’m looking forward to getting there 😜😎”.

“My Waka Ama dream is getting to Worlds and we’ve achieved that, what would be crazy is if we could take out a race or win a medal, that would be amazing 🤩 “.

Bronze medal for us today 🥉in the J16 V6 500m’s. 3rd in the world is pretty cool 🤙🏾😎, congrats to Fa’a Nui and EDT on taking out the Gold and Silver Medals you guys are so fast 💨

That wraps up our World Sprints campaign for 2024, with a silver, and bronze. None of this would be possible without the awhi of our Whānau and supporters that have worked so hard to get us here ❤️, love you all 💯 Thankyou . Special mention to our awesome coach Michel and Manager Mumma Tau, we wouldn’t be here today without you ❤️❤️

To our Taurea brothers, what a journey we’ve been on 😅, brothers for life 🤜🏾🤛🏾… on to the next.

We Go!

Rehutai Appleyard is of Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Pāoa, Te Whakatōhea and Scottish decent. As well as repping Taurea Va’a Rehutai is also a member of the J19 NZ Elite men’s team for the 2024 World Sprint Championships in Hawaii.

“What I love about Waka Ama is that I’m always connected to my Tupuna because how we paddle on the Waka is how they navigated back in the day”.

“Living a fit and healthy life is good for you because it can build mental strength and discipline. When we’re in the Waka we all paddle for each other, we don’t paddle for ourselves we’re all paddling for each other. We’re all going through the same struggles together, and that’s what unites us even further”.

The bro Boston is from Ngāti Rangitihi, Te Rarawa, Tainui and Ngāti Porou. Boston is part of the muscle in the middle of our Waka , and is the caller for our crew.

“I love hanging out with my team, they are my family 🫶🏽. I feel great when I’m paddling because all that stress and frustration in my mind, I just let it out on the water. My dream is to win a medal at the world champs in Hawaii and bring it back to my family 😎”

😍😍😍

Mauri is our other brother from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei 💪🏾. Mauri is fast 🏃🏾‍♂️🔥 on and off the Moana and can also line you up with a pretty mean mullet 💈 ✂️

“I think it’s a good thing to be fit and healthy because when you do physical activity it sets you up to have a good day everyday. It’s hard giving it your all, but when you look up and see all your team mates going hard with you it feels good pushing with them”.

Our bro from up the hill at Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is the current New Zealand J16 V1 500m champ 💪🏾🥇.

“I just love being connected to the water, paddling with the brothers and having fun. It’s pretty mean living a fit and healthy life, but I still eat Maccas and KFC 😅. The dream was to be NZ Champ, and I’ve achieved that, now the dream is to be world champ and for our Taurea team to take out all the races at”.
