Identifying a list of women I looked up to, a few years ago, was a major turning point for me. π¦
I wrote this list during a Visioning Workshop with Lara Franks in 2022.
At the time, I found myself trapped in a disheartening corporate routine, attempting to fit my passions into the limited gaps available, and experiencing a profound sense of disconnection from myself.
This list made it instantly apparent the type of life I truly wanted:
π€ΈββοΈ Eva Zu Beck: Adventure travel blogger, who explores the world alone with her dog.
π€ΈββοΈ Kylie Rook: Very accomplished yoga teacher in New Zealand who works with people 1:1 in a holistic way, runs teacher trainings, and retreats.
π€ΈββοΈ Brianna Madia: Bestselling author, who travels in her giant orange truck with her 4 dogs.
π€ΈββοΈ Cheryl Strayed: A brilliant, honest writer who shares incredible books (such as WILD, about her experience on the Appalachian Trail). She shares her human imperfections with such eloquence and acceptance for who she actually is.
π€ΈββοΈ Clara Roberts-Oss: An accomplished yoga teacher who runs a successful online yoga studio called Practice With Clara.
All these women:
π Ditched the status quo
π Are self employed, many are writers (my childhood dream)
π Make curiosity and exploration a lifestyle (fresh ideas > boring rules)
π Spend a lot of time in nature (no office jobs)
π Are extremely active - all of these women either hike, do yoga, travel, some even do ultramarathons!
By writing this list, it became clear that I want to be someone who prioritises wellness and movement. Who makes travel and exploration, spending time in nature, a lifestyle. Who is self-employed, free, and authentic. No offices, florescent lights, and bureaucracy governing my every move.
Flash forward to 2024: β
Now, I'm working with Kylie as my mentor - I've left my permanent 9 to 5 role, and am grabbing my dream life with both hands, committing to my business Homegrown Yoga (online yoga studio, and wellness events for women to reconnect to themselves).
Realising who I looked up to, was a very powerful reframe for me about my true values, and my authentic desires.
Why not try writing a list of people you look up to?
Who knows, it might change your whole perspective! π

I'd like to apologise in advance for this downer of a post π₯πΆ
A while ago, a tiny line in a traumatic news story shifted my mindset in a major way.
It was a horrible situation in South Korea, where hundreds of people died due to a crowd crush in Itaewon on Halloween.
It made me so sad, I honestly was thinking about it for weeks.
However, there was something that stuck out to me about the article.
One of the deceased victims was described as...
..an office worker. π©βπΌ
Just that, an office worker.
Something about reading that made my blood run cold. Not because thereβs anything wrong with working in an office.
It was because I realised I was a very, very, unhappy full time office worker.
If I died suddenly, I didn't want my descriptor to be "office worker."
Something about that inner knowing, that deep unease, told me something.
I seemed fine on the surface, I could do the work.
I kept telling myself it didn't make sense to change my path.
However...
I realised that this person who died, they had goals.
Dreams.
Lofty ambitions perhaps he didn't know if he could achieve.
Maybe he was unhappy at his office job.
However, now he is gone.
I was in South Korea on a solo trip, just a few years ago. It really could have been me, in some other sort of random freak accident.
It made me realise there is no time like the present.
If you want something, it's worth acting now.
We all expect to live until we are 100.
We care so much about what other people think.
However, for what?
I've realised the most important thing is that you're happy with you. That you're excited about the journey you're on.
Yoga was what jumpstarted my relationship with myself, and allowed me to finally take the big steps towards what truly mattered to me.
Now, I'm a contractor and yoga teacher and have created the freedom and values alignment I've wanted for so long.
Now my question is: What matters to you?
Donβt wait.
