The great annual battle for the Bone of Contention is upon us this Saturday, marking your final chance to grace the green before it goes into winter hibernation for renovations.

This year we’re throwing the doors open – Social Members, Full Members, anyone with a pulse and a vague sense of humour is welcome. No club colours needed.

Please gather at the club at 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start. The format will be decided on the day, and we aim to wrap up around 4:30pm so we can all settle in for the AFC Semi Final afterwards.

Now, the big twist. In previous years it’s been Kiwis vs Immigrants. This year we’re going with something far more dangerous: age-based rivalry.

Introducing:

The Vintage Legends – seasoned, wise, creaky in the knees but deadly on the draw.

The Young Guns – energetic, fast, and still able to stand up without making sound effects.

Nature has already assigned you to your team

After the battle concludes, the bar will be open for a few frothies and the retelling of events that definitely didn’t happen the way they’ll be described.

Tonight is our last twilight event of the season. The sun is shining so head down to the club from 5:15. The bar will be open and an optional meal for an extra tenner. See you all down there

Afternoon all - the sun is out so make the most of the opportunity tonight to head down to the club for what could be one of the last twilight events of the season

Our Anniversary Tournament and Season Pinnacle Event

Well, just to think - on Thursday evening we nearly called the whole weekend off due to a threatening weather forecast. Friday morning bought slightly better information, so we ran with it, it being our two-day Anniversary Classic Tournament which has brought 16 teams from all over the North Shore (and further) to the bowling gem that is Beach Haven Bowling Club. The rewards for the 64 bowlers who graced our green were experiencing great food, great company, and BRILLIANT weather until late Sunday afternoon when a shower cut a few ends short in the last round.

Of course, nothing like this can happen without with a lot of help from outside the immediate membership of the club as well as from within the membership. We therefore gratefully acknowledge support from Terry Henshaw and Gr8 Moas, Lawn Care specialists and sponsors for the weekend. Many thanks Terry, we could not have done it without you.

As would be expected, a tournament such as this draws talented bowlers and the standard of play was excellent and some very close results were posted from the 8 rounds that were played over the weekend in a mix of Fours and Pairs format. The winning team was not found until the results of the final round came in with the erstwhile leaders stumbling at the last hurdle letting a close challenger through to take the day. We therefore were able to declare Trevor Minty's team from Wellsford the outright winners. Congratulations guys, it was great to see one of the smaller clubs making a significant contribution to the weekend.

Photos show Terry Henshaw presenting the handsome trophy to Trevor Minty's team and also indicate the weather we had for 98% of the time. If you are curious about the yellow birds, it was our President Ron Smith, (and Tournament Convenor) getting all his ducks in row - top marks Ron, even if one of them was facing the wrong way!

Good Morning All,
I'm sure you've all seen the weather out there today - and as such there will be no bowling tonight.
We will however have the bar open from 5pm so you are welcome to join us for a frothy and tell some tall tales whilst enjoying that.
If there's enough interest whilst we are down there we can look at arranging a light meal too.
See you all down there

Our much contested Kaipatiki Cup was held again on Saturday against Sunnybrae Bowling Club. The sun was out and so was the wind which did make it challenging at times. Beachhaven managed to pull away for the win but only during the last round of games which was very fitting considering it's a year today since our dear friend and fellow bowler Darrin McLay passed away. You might see in the photos that a number of our players are wearing bright socks in memory of Darrin who always sported his colourful socks on the green. Thanks ever so much to Dominos Beachhaven for sponsoring the event and keeping the bellys full throughout the day

The Pakuranga Fours is a annual major Open event hosted by Pakauranga BC and was held over two days 5th/6th March. It is a highly prestigious event and attracts many bowlers from all over Auckland and beyond. A team of Beach Haven members comprising Ron Smith, Roy Parker, Brian Nolan and Merv Malpas finished in a very creditable 3rd Place this year and we congratulate them on their success in a very closely fought finish. Well done gentlemen, you have done us proud! It is amazing that a small family Club as is Beach Haven can produce results such as this - GO THE HAVEN!!

Mens Club Championship Pairs 220226

The Mens Club Championship Pairs competition concluded after several Section Play rounds were played in a 2 Life format to reduce the field to the finalists. There is no place to hide in a Pairs competition, and the earlier rounds produced some excellent bowling and demonstrated that when put to the test, many of our Members can rise to the occasion when under pressure. The two finalists were eventually found after a day and a half of quiet concentration, one with 1 life left and the other (a highly experienced Pair) unbeaten with 2 lives remaining. However, the weather closed in during the 5th end of the preliminary final and play was abandoned for the day with the score and 4:5.

Sunday 22nd Feb saw a small but fascinated gathering of members watching the end of the competition and so concluded what may have been the longest contest period in the history of the Club, as the earlier rounds had all been played over the weekend of 29/30th November. The final result showed that experience and tenacity will generally take the day in such circumstances and the experienced Pair of Dean McMurchy and Chris Gore won the Championship Pairs despite the best efforts of Ron Smith and Brian Nolan and maintaining their unbeaten record throughout the competition.

Well done Dean and Chris, you were the deserved winners of a much-coveted Club Championship.
