Traditionally the designer initiates the drawing process to allow the sailing team and Project manager to put together a component list. By the time this list has been modified, confirmed and signed off, the designer’s original drawings have already been supplied with the original details to the builder to start construction. This is unfortunately where errors can occur. It is no “fault”, it’s just the process. Yachting Projects’s role has been to asses the drawings and chase the various parties for the details then adapt the drawings, normally turning a 2 dimensional CAD drawing into a 3 dimensional model correctly placing the deck gear and all of the on-board systems. The third dimension highlights any issues that the 2D drawings just don’t show up. Most suppliers have 3D models of components so it’s very much cut and paste but making sure correct positioning is critical. The latest systems Yachting Projects have been modelling are the under deck sailing control systems on the TP52 class yachts. In the original days this was done with string, a drill and a lot of luck, but now with the aid of the 3D modelling program, it can all be done on a computer. All the systems can be modelled into the structure of the boat with the utmost accuracy. Using the correct purchase and block sizing even the rigging lengths can be supplied to the rigger. This can be done early in the build to allow for additional core inserts and laminate to be built into the internal structure as it is produced. This saves an enormous amount of time for the builder at the end of the build where time is short and extremely valuable. Due to the functionality of the 3D modelling, should a system clash with another, it can simply be moved to a better position (that a bit hard to do the old way once the holes are drilled)

Once the 3D is modelled, screen shots and 3D pdf files can be emailed or sent to a dropbox for signoff. Then 2D CAD drawings can be produced for construction.
