Motorsport team led by Daniel+Gary Hughes. Dan is 17, starting 2nd year of Speedway TQ Midget racing. Daniel is a young speedway dirt race track driver.

He is in Year 12 at St Peter's College Auckland, aged 16, with 3 seasons racing experience so far in the youth Quarter Midgets class. Petrol fumes run in this family: supported always by his Grandad Alan who raced speedway cars, his Dad Gary who mostly did tarmac circuit racing, and uncle Tony from off-roader cars. Many other friends and mentors, sponsors and fellow competitors help out from time to time, Dan always appreciates the support and all his Facebook followers.

Rosebank Speedway, as part of Powersports try to get our lease sorted for the next few years, we are having to go through a consultation process.

We ask that everyone copies and pastes what is below and sends and email off to the address at the bottom.

If you travel from out of town to race put that in as well. If your business benefits from having motorsport at the domain add that in as well. Please be respectful if you add anything to the draft or choose to write you own.

Please share and ensure that everyone sends an email and not just share so we don't lose another motorsport venue in Auckland.
If you don't want to go to a hearing if one is required, take out the last line.

Rosebank Domain Park – Powersports Lease

I am writing to support the granting of a lease to Powersports at Rosebank Domain Park

Rosebank Domain Park been associated with motorsport for over 60 years. Powersports was first granted a license to use the site for motorsport in 1962 and has been using the site ever since.

The site is one of only three locations in Auckland designated as a motorsport precinct in the Auckland Unitary Plan.

The Auckland Council group’s own Speedway location analysis completed in 2023 also determined that Rosebank Domain Park should remain a motorsport venue.

Despite attempts to get a new lease put in place the organisation has been left with a month-by-month lease for over five years.

It is essential that Powersports be granted a long-term lease at Rosebank Domain Park.

If there is a hearing I / we would like to participate.

Back in Te Awamutu tonight to get some high revving motorcycle songs cutting through the Waikato air.
TQ Midgets GSx-R 750 and the Sidecars 1000, maybe a better concert than Pink?!
Daniel is off Grid 11 for first heat race and then outside front row for his 2nd.
Passing points all count towards where he will start eventually in the feature race.

A night of lows and then finally a high for the Daniel Hughes Racing team at Western Springs Speedway on Friday 23rd.

Heat 1 we started in great position on the front row in P2, but when the flag when down sadly the throttle pedal wouldn’t go down, sending us to the infield to watch the race grumpily. A clay rock had lodged under the foot pedal on the warm-up laps and seemed to be the issue, frustrating but should be an easy fix.

Or so we thought, until our next heat race, when again the motor would not pick up and rev past about 5000 (should go to 11000rpm). Back to the infield and the pits for a rethink!

Thanks to Gina at Harris Race Car Parts Ltd and Cooke Motorsport for arranging use of a spare stepper motor (issue identified- electrics not opening the fuel butterfly properly) Dan could finally get back out for the feature.

Starting at the very rear of a field of 17 cars due to earlier DNFs, Dan made some passes and picked up spots to finish in 11th place. Dan was fired up for that race and left it all out there - including all the tread on the rear right tyre - came in like a smooth cushion!

Our driver was very tired after a week of working on the tools befor Friday racing, but the cheeky pit crew kept their smiles, thanks Craig for the fun in the pits, and to Viv and Liam and Alan for all their support. Dan enjoyed the company including catching up with Paul the Dirt Demon Racing - Saloon 146a from Flowright Gasfitting and some of Daniel’s new work buddies was an added bonus too.

Back to work on a Friday evening 23rd Feb, for Daniel’s 2nd and final race meeting at Western Springs Speedway

Unusual to get the adrenaline juiced up on a Friday night, but the BR Landsey OWL Autosport & ORCA Motosport 47A crew are looking forward to it!
Some tickets at the gate still from 3pm.

A short season for sure, but better than none at alll at the grand old venue!

North Island Sprintcar Title- Western Springs 17.2.24 19/02/2024

Excellent to be back at Western Springs Stadium racing last Saturday. The track packed in hard and fast, not too shabby after a year with nobody looking after it.
Congrats to all the people who worked hard on track prep and putting on a meeting in difficult Council conditions.

The had good battles in the mid pack all evening including with our mates at Groshinski Racing.
(Cool shots thank you Alana Warrington Photography)

I made a good start in the feature race and picked up about 3 places in the first couple of laps, but then a small mistake and jumped over the cushion they’d created by tilling up the outside of the track. The TQ Midget class is so close that a small thing costs you 3 or 4 places, and basically left me near the back and battling the rest of the race to regain a position or two.

No matter, loads of fun anyway, and super atmosphere to be back at the Springs. Thank you to Tony, Craig, Poppa and Dad for handling the pit crew duties.

After more than a year washed away, there’s a lot of excitement in the pit area to be back at Western Springs Speedway

And a lot of race cars here ready to go too - 35 winged Sprintcars for their North Island Championship, and about 25 TQ Midgets in our class too.

Driver Daniel keen to get on with it !

Last weekend, threatened doom and gloom thunderstorms did not appear and we got a full night of racing at Huntly International Speedway

The track was dry and slick because they’d understandably not added water due to the weather forecast. So low levels of grip, lots of wheelspinning, and a bit of overdriving by some guys and gals in the TQ Midgets meant accidents and stoppages in all races during the night.

Starting 18th in the feature race, Daniel had some good mid pack battles and eventually finished in 12th. A race of attrition with several cars upside down and a very disjointed forward and back race.

After about 5 yellow light restarts ⚠️Survival was the order of the day, and Dan managed it with only one Nerf bar wrecked in the process 🔨

As an unexpected bonus we werent aware of, the good people at Cooke Roofing Ltd, who have done heaps to support and organise the Central Series TQ Midgets surprised us with a “lucky 12th place“ award!@?
Thank you guys, extra bit of cash in the back pocket for our nights troubles and certainly better than Unlucky 13th.

Quite probably you'll have guessed that motorsport all over the North Island last weekend was on the damp side.💦
TQ Midgets managed to get 2 races in at McDonald's Kihikihi Speedway on Saturday before the meeting was abandoned due to rain. ⛈

The first race was a slippery ice-rink affair due to drizzle on the track for 20 minutes up to our race time.
Safe to say that driver Dan didn't much like those track conditions and our BR Landsey OWL Autosport car set-up didn't help at the time, but he sloshed it around and avoided crunching the wall as a couple of cars did.

By race 2 things had dried a little and we could get proper racy again. This video shows the first lap of heat #2.
Starting near the back Dan kept the Orca Motorsport/Flowright Gasfitting machine tidy, lost some time avoiding a car spinning in front of him, and came home in 13th.
Soon after that the heavens opened again and then she was a damp trailer ride home🌂

Next Time - Huntly Speedway 10 Feb, then the mighty Western Springs Speedway reopening on 17th Feb. Can't wait!

THANKS to the Perkins-Landsey clan, Viv and Craig, Alan Hughes, Lexi, Zoe, Dylan and his dad Phil for coming to support Daniel.

This Saturday night 27 January TQ Midget racing action returns to McDonald's Kihikihi Speedway for the Waipa Champs.

We are racing as one of the support classes to the NZ Saloon car Champs, with our very own Paul Wright hustling the Dirt Demon Racing - Saloon 146a in search of a championship podium too.
Two Flowright Gasfitting cars on track for the price of one this weekend!

Back before Xmas Daniel enjoyed his run on the track surface in Te Awamutu, so we are hoping for another good solid set of 3 races in the BR Landsey OWL Autosports & Orca Motorsport .

Following this weekend we may take a chill pill for Waitangi break 🛌 then racing at Huntly 10 Feb
** AND THEN FINALLY ** 🏎⚡️🏎👏
a return to the heritage of Western Springs Stadium ( ) for racing on 17 Feb and 23 Feb.
This may be the last ever since the goddamn 👿Auckland Unlimited renegade unit within Council continues trying to kill it!

Massive thank you to Viv Perkins and Craig, Alan H, Daryl of Write On Signs and Chris Williams for supporting Dan's racing season.

Thoughts on Huntly racing this weekend...
Saturday night I had an enjoyable evening for my first time at Huntly International Speedway. Strange enough, I never ended up racing there when running in Quarter Midget juniors.

Although the night had its ups and downs, overall I came away pleased. And Dad not grumpy since car is undamaged 😊

We finished 6th and 9th in our heat races, and that put us off Grid 12 for the feature race. It took a bit of time to figure out a good racing line into the tight Turn 1, although the car would pick up really well out of T1 and T2 corners.

Then unfortunately didn’t have good luck in the feature when a car spun in front of us and our #47 had nowhere to go. We came away unscathed but had to restart from the back. Eventually made up a couple of positions but was a slightly disappointing end to the night.

Overall though I had a really great time racing, even though the track looked very wet at first - good work by the track crew and Waikato club as it turned out to be perfect later on.

Thanks to all those helping me, Orca Motorsport Write On Signs Flowright Gasfitting www.law-strategy.nz and most of all my Poppa and the Landsey-Perkins family, cheers Viv Perkins

> Have a good week if youre struggling back to work!

Hope you've all had a welcome week away at the beach (like us) where the only motorsport was on the stream 📺 and the swims were frequent 🏖
Refreshed and now ready to get back into it properly for 2024, the BR Landsey Owl Autosports- Flowright Gasfitting- Orca Motorsport #47 is off to race in the Waikato TQ Midget championship tonight.

This is our first event for 2024, being held at Huntly International Speedway and sponsored by the good family team at Cooke Roofing Ltd.
Last time out in between Xmas and New Year's was a neat little confidence boost for the team, and the cool Write On Signs colours are still gleaming, so we'll rip it into again tonight.

As always, we're super grateful to Viv Landsey and Craig Landsey for supporting Daniel's racing, and all the effort by Alan Hughes and others on the crew helping at various times.
Racing starts at 7pm. If you're still holidaying in the Waikato area come on down and say hello.
